2018 IIHF World Championships (May 4 - 20)
The level of interest in the World Championships probably isn't high enough to need separate threads for each game, so I figured I'd start an ongoing catch-all thread to discuss the various games.
The tournament is being held in Denmark this year and started yesterday.
The Flames are represented by 3 players and 1 coach. Bill Peters is Team Canada's head coach. Johnny Gaudreau, Mikael Backlund, and David Rittich are there representing their home countries.
Backlund will serve as Sweden's captain for the tournament. At 29, he is also Sweden's oldest player.
Canada, Sweden, and the USA began their tournaments yesterday. The US defeated Canada 5-4 in a shootout and Sweden shutout Belarus 5-0.
Rittich and the Czechs open their tournament today against their former Cold War roommates, Slovakia. The US are playing their second game today against the host Danes.
Both games will be starting shortly on TSN (Czech-o-Slovakia on TSN2, USA-Denmark on TSN4).
It looks like Rittich will not be getting the start for the Czechs.

USA wins 4-0. Gaudreau finishes with one assist.
Slovakia led 2-1 until the Czechs tied the game with 10 seconds left. OT is just starting.
EDIT: Just over two minutes into OT, the Czechs score.

Draisaitl won't be able to shoot in the shootout if it goes that far.
Must be an Oilers thing

And Germany lost in the shootout. Norway won the shootout 3-0, so Draisaitl wouldn't have made a difference even if he had been able to shoot.
Earlier today, Canada crushed Korea 10-0.
Sweden defeated the Czech Republic 3-2. Backlund was kept off the scoresheet. Rittich took the loss for the Czechs, making 27 saves on 30 shots.
Tomorrow, the USA plays Germany at 8:15am MT; Canada takes on the host Danes at 12:15pm MT; and Sweden faces France, also at 12:15pm MT.

Is there any player or players at the World championships that are being talked up as possible NHL free agent signings or NHL entry draft selections?.
I know best player outside the NHL can be a misleading statement but I can think of a few guys that have earned NHL contracts based on their performance in this tournament in past years.

I did not watch Team USA's last game against Denmark, but notice today that Gaudreau has been moved off of Kane's line. He is on a line with Derek Ryan and Anders Lee.

Germany's goalie is putting on a clinic during the US powerplay, keeping the game scoreless.

Gaudreau and Kane together is fun, but perhaps they are too similar to share a line all the time, (though Kane is a better sniper). They are likely trying to spread out the offence.

Team USA won 3-0. It was a 3 point game for Kane (1G/2A). Gaudreau had one assist.
Halfway through the first, Sweden leads France 2-0. Backlund has his first point of the tournament with a PP goal.
Canada just scored to take a 1-0 lead (Josh Bailey). It's also about halfway through the first.

Ekblad used the Schwartz (as a screen) and scored with a blast from the point to put Canada up 2-0.
Both games are 2-0 after 1.

Barzal scored an early PP goal in the second, but after a lengthy review, it was called back due to goalie interference by O'Reilly (he entered the crease after the puck and was in a battle with the Danish d-man for position -- definitely contact with the goalie, but looked unavoidable, it could have gone either way).
Anyway, that doesn't matter as Canada has scored 3 goals in less than 3 minutes (Eberle, O'Reilly, RNH) to take a 5-0 lead.
OEL has scored for Sweden to make the score in that game 3-0.
