Gustavsson is a real solid goalie prospect. I feel like he and Parsons are on the same level of blue chippyness

Doesn't look that bad actually to me, with the huge caveat depending on the first.
Duchene has been a point-per-game player for nearly two months while Turris has fallen off the cliff. If they weren't going to sign Turris anyways and do have Duchene long-term (or recoup costs for him if they blow it up completely), that's pretty good upgrade for Ottawa.
Just like the Kessel-1st(Seguin) trade, it was not ideal to have the wheels fall off when you don't have a first, but if they don't end up with Dahlin or a top 3 pick or the 2019 pick ends up late, Duchene is probably worth it.

Except for the fact that Duchene is UFA next year too. And didn't want to play for a rebuilding team in Colorado, and now the Sens decided they want to rebuild.
They are likely just going to end up trading Duchene next year at the deadline too, will get a late first for him and will have pretty much given up an early first for nothing.
Even if you say the 1st rounders are a wash (which they aren't since they one they got is pretty much guaranteed to be 25-30 and the one they gave up is going to be in the lottery) and ignore the Phaneuf trade since it's a cap dump.
It works out to
Turris (UFA), Brassard (1 yr left), Bowers (2017 1st), 2018 3rd for Duchene (1 yr left), Cole (UFA), Gustavsson (2016 2nd)
So two top 6 centers, a top prospect, and a third for Duchene, Cole, and a top prospect goalie. That is still brutal before you even consider they likely drop 15-20 spots in the 1st round.

I think that’s awful value for the sens. Late 1st, a goalie prospect (which are super unpredictable), and a bottom pairing D who they will probably trade right away, for their second best center, on a good contract, with term.
I think that’s robbery for the Pens

Turris was a UFA this year.
Brassard just got them a late first and essentially 2nd's if Cole is flipped for one. Duchene is the better player, so not sure why he would only receive a late first. He's found his game again, he's put up 23 points in his last 23 games. He's young enough to build around if the Senators want to go that way, if not, he's going to receive a premium return when they do trade him.
And an early first is not guaranteed, weird things happen. Heck, this Senators team was a 100 point team just last year.

Agreed - goalies indeed unpredictable but he's one of the top goalie prospects out there.
The first will be obviously latter part of the round, but this is shaping up to be a nice draft.
I thought this was actually a decent return for the Sens.

18 % retained on Brassard to go play for another team
25 % retained on Phaneuf to go play for another team...
These are just absolute terrible deals.
I'd take Bobby Ryan if he was 25 % retained honestly at this point and that seems to be the flavour of the day for Ottawa right now. Insanity.

The salary retention isn't confirmed yet, but 18% is out there.

You'd pay Bobby Ryan 5.6M for four years after this one?
The guy has 7 goals this season playing with good linemates and getting PP time.

If Ottawa retains on Brassard/Phaneuf, won't they be unable to retain on Ryan's deal?

They would be able to retain on one more deal.
Teams are allowed to only have a maximum of 3 retained salaries per season

Are we assuming they don't have any retained salary from a deal from a previous year, or is do they just only have the 2 retained salaries?

I still think Ryan isn't being utilized correctly and has never been in Ottawa ~ the guy was a superstar in Anaheim. I think he's easily a 50 to 60 point guy again playing with Johnny and Mony.
