That plane took us a long time to get back in the program. It was stuck in the states and we had to figure out how to fly it back to repair at home.

I'm curious about the bolded. Aside from war, the military is actually extremely safe, imo more so than most commercial enterprise. While the equipment is sometimes old, and the tempo is high, particularly in MJ, safety is priority one and we go to great lengths to manage risk.

Wasn't one of his last military posts on rotary deployed in Afghanistan? I could see maybe deciding on a different track after that.

As you say, I'm sure the flight training program in Moose Jaw would be very high quality, and certainly not particularly risky.

That's true, deployment changes a lot of people views on life in general.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I can only speak for the Bird family, but the outpouring of support has been greatly appreciated in this tough time.

If anyone wishes to attend his service, it will be held 2pm on Sunday February 19, at the Mount Royal University Bella Concert Hall.

His Obituary:

While, I don't intend on commenting too much, the incident mentioned earlier in this thread did happen. However, Jeff absolutely loved his time in the military and that incident was not the underlying factor when he was done. Rather, his contract was up and he chose not to renew as he wanted to be back in Calgary with his extended family after living away for 11 years.

He took the MRU job as he wanted a position, that like the military, allowed him to fly during the day and go home to his wife and children every night.

Everything he did was for his family.

Sorry for your loss DeanOMac. While I didn't know him personally it has affected many at the base here in MJ.

I didn't realize all planes don't have flight data recording boxes. I guess that makes sense for smaller aircraft, but without that information it seems impossible to pinpoint exactly what happened.
