Wow, Gawdin is far too high on that list. No Phillips? No Kinnvall?
I do not understand their criteria at all.

I actually agree with their ranking of Gawdin. He's not flashy, and may not have as high a ceiling as some other guys, but his floor may be higher. I think he will definitely be in the NHL some day, albeit most likely in a bottom-6 role.
I agree wholeheartedly about Phillips and Kinvall. I've been heaping praise on Kinvall since we signed him. I think he has star potential, and may make an impact as early as next year, when he's slated to come over. Phillips may or may not have the deck stacked against him, being that it's Darryl's team now, but I still see potential in him.

Based on this list, you wonder if Heineman would be considered a top 5 prospect for the Flames at this point which would be cool.
There is no trophy for having the best prospect base but this team has to make building through the draft a greater priority. You just can't be bad on the big league level while not having strong prospects either.

To me the Flames have a clear top 4 which are:
Zary
Pelletier
Wolf
Mackey
Then you get into a next group which would include:
Petterson
Phillips
Gawdin
And maybe a couple others (Kuznetzov? Ruzicka? Kinnvall?)
To me he's in that group. In the 6-10 range.

I wonder if Wolf was drafted in the 2nd round instead of the 7th if he’d crack the top 100. For what he’s accomplished so far it’s kind of ridiculous he’s ranked so low. I’m guessing they think his size is the issue but it hasn’t hurt him so far.

What puts Gawdin in your second group at this point? Particularly ahead of Ruzicka?

I see all those guys in the same grouping. But yeah given his year Ruzicka should probably be ahead. I have a bit of a negative perception of the guy b/c of past laziness observed.

I'd say Zary and Pelletier are in their own group.
To me, Wolf and Mackey are different because of two big factors.
Wolf - while his play and credentials put him in the top group, his size is a big asterisk. He'd have to overcome some odds but can't deny his upside
Mackey - He'll be 25 at start of next season. If he were playing instead of Stone, he'd actually be our 3rd oldest defenseman. So upside is probably limited.
But I agree they are ahead of the next group, who may not have an NHLer in the bunch. Ruzicka might be my favorite there, maybe Kinnvall too. And maybe this new guy.

Any chance of moving this to the main Flames forum? It would get more views and participation there, and is certainly more interesting than reading about whether the Flames could move to Houston, or what exactly it was about Sam Bennett that led to his trade...

Yep, this seems about right.
Flames are tied for least amount of picks in the top two rounds over the last 3 drafts. Our poor prospect pool is due to a lack of picks.
It is so frustrating to see where this team is, and the low number of picks in the last 3 seasons.
Will the team be smart and focus on building for the future? Or will they do what they did last go ‘round and revel their mediocrity until their assets are gone, their prospect pool is poor, and the results are bottom of the barrel. We’re already there for 2 of the 3...so now we wait and see how they handle Giordano and Gaudreau this summer.

With all the picks the Flames have, there's really no where to go up up.
It'll be satisfying to see the Flames prospect pool replenished.
Is it just me, or have the Heat not accomplished anything at all in 10+ years? It seems like they've only made the playoffs twice or so in that time.
It would be nice if the prospect pool were deep and mature enough for the Heat to actually compete for a change.

I think some of our prospects don’t get recognized for how good they are, even by us. I really believe that Chechelev, for example, has really solid potential to become a #1 goalie in the NHL-like Sorokin and Shesterkin. More could be said about guys like Solovyov, and Nikolayev too. I also really think that Kinnvall is criminally underrated. Perhaps our prospect base as a whole is being underrated.

Criminally underrated compared to what? Almost every team has better. Those Russians you named don’t even get invites to the junior team camps so they clearly aren’t very highly regarded in their own countries in terms of “how good they are”. I think an objective look at our pool would put us in the 20-30 range amongst other franchises. As for root causes I think it comes down to:
- GM trading a lot of high picks for players that don’t work out
- Poor overseas scouting (when was our last good pick out of Europe?)
- Best pick of the last 5 years didn’t want to sign unfortunately

Wolf is a wild card
Anybody remember how they drooled over Gilles and Parsons?

Fans tend to overrate prospects
Phillips has been in the system for 5 yrs and they don’t even give him a sniff
His next stop is more the waiver wire than the regular lineup

Wow, most of those teams in the bottom 10 have won Cups or went to the Stanley Cup finals in recent years. The Flames on the other-hand, not even close. How fitting that they and the NYI, the 2 most mediocre teams over the past 3 decades get to sit side by side.

Every prospect is a wild card. It is okay to be excited and optimistic about great performances when they happen.

They both suffered major injuries, among other things.
Even good draft picks are subject to a lot of uncertainties during development.
But yes, it has been forever since the Flames fully drafted and developed a goalie. It's only rational to have doubts about the future success of goalie prospects.
But Wolf has put up the best numbers in a long while. He definitely has a good head on his shoulders. There's a ton of players in the WHL, so it's pretty impressive that Wolf won the Scholastic Play of the Year.
I just hope they don't make him stew in the AHL for too long. Nearly every elite goalie in the league had many NHL starts in their early 20s.
It would also be handy for cap reasons, but that's another story.

You’re such a positive light in every thread and every topic
What those guys did has no influence on Wolf except yes goalies are hard to project
He’s still one of the organizations top prospects
