Wanted England to win but going into it I knew Spain were the better side and were going to win. Happy for Cucu but gutted for Palmer (and Gallagher) but mostly Palmer. England played poorly all tournament and shouldn't have been in that final.

No question Spain was the class of this tournament and totally deserved to win this game. But there is a lot of England hate here. England had a lot of excellent young players on this year’s team and even more coming up the ranks.

Congrats Spain!

England gets the equalizer...Spain is looking a bit wobbly...and England gets a throw-in deep in the Spain half.

And Kyle Walker throws it backwards, to Stones, who passes to Pickford.

Turning point: the England throw-in that encapsulated 58 years of hurt

Quote:
The clock shows 74:49.

Kyle Walker trots forward to take the throw and Palmer gives the ball up for him. Walker studies his options – the long throw into the mixer, the short one to Palmer or Saka, who are wheeling around in front of him like bobbins – and doesn’t like any of them. So he waits. Perhaps he even freezes momentarily. By the time Walker releases the ball it has spent 31 seconds – 3.4% of the remaining time available in the match – in his hands. The noise has died down a little.

Walker, a powerful man, takes a run-up. Winds up those fearsome, Carrington-carved core muscles. Hurls the ball with all his might. It skims through the Berlin night, skips across the turf and finds its way to … John Stones in defence, 40 yards behind him.

But Stones is under pressure and returns it to Pickford. Pickford is also under pressure and boots the ball straight out of play for a Spain goal-kick. Ollie Watkins scowls at him. Pickford shrugs and grimaces at once, like a man who has stolen a hedgehog, stuffed it down his trousers and is now trying to play it cool in front of the parish elders.

The clock shows 75:29. England’s little frisson of post-goal momentum has simply evaporated, gone, stolen off into the night.

Like the short corner that Walker passed back to Pickford in the quarterfinals(?). Walker had a pretty poor tournament. More than a few goals were in large part due to a turnover by him or his positioning. He’s got to be one of the potential players that it’s time to move on from. It’s not just the manager.

I've said this consistently, Walker is an okay player but he uses his pace to overcome many of his shortcomings.

But 'Pace' is a perishable asset.

The thing is, while hating England is right there with hating the Cowboys and Yankees as far as a sports fans duty, it's because of how disgusting they played that drew most of the hate. If England played the most beautiful, free flowing and attacking football, well I would hate that it's England doing it, but I would love to watch it. But they played terrorism ball, with pretty much unquestionably the best group of attacking talent in the tournament.

I said it already, but Southgate's terrorism led me to actually feel sorry for England fans to have to watch that dross. Sure, it got "results", but it didn't actually, the lucky draws got them results. You can't convince me Big Sam doesn't coax the same results since 2018. Or most managers. When your tactics are "play negatively and hope for individual brilliance", pretty sure all of us could do that.

Man. As someone who was a Soccer coach for a decade I'd have killed to have that kind of talent at my disposal.

They were so focused on trying not to lose that they didn't try to win.

You know. It is still a game. Try and have some fun?

It is pretty crazy that the collection of talent they had averaged less than 1 xGF per game...and I think they scored equalizers in the 65" minute or later on their first shot on target in three knockout games which was extremely fortunate.

Really they should have been out in the round of 16 against Slovakia.

Oilers losing in 2-1 in Game 7 followed by England losing a 2nd final in a row. It's been a good few weeks.

That's another thing I love about yesterday. Spain's winning goal? Basically a tap in. Cause they played so well together and had great tactics to be able to generate one. Pretty much England had were hit and hope goals. Almost worked too.

The right move.
So many if their players will be only entering their prime by the World Cup; time to adapt to a different style and get ready for that.

It was a pretty boring tournament to be honest...who had a remarkable performance in this tournament? Nico Williams and Yamal probably the only real standouts.

Yeah, I agree. I'd add Rodri and Olmo to that list too.
But there certainly had to be a better pick than Walker.

Honestly pretty smart by Southgate to leave now. Still has a mostly clean rep with the English media, avoids the potential of 2026 seeing his luck crap out, and makes him available if Ten Hag gets sacked.
