You cannot get proper Chicago style pizza in Calgary (or anywhere in Western Canada really).

Making the pizza really thick is not enough to make it Chicago style pizza.

Donair Pizza from Paul's Pizza in Airdrie

Doritos Pizza from Canadian Brewhouse

Butter Chicken Pizza from Pizza 73

Those are my go to's right now. Nothing too fancy. I mean the Butter Chicken from Pizza 73 probably isn't good, strictly speaking, but I like it, it's cheap, and it's right on my way home from work, so you see what happens.

Yeah. It's a shame, because there used to be a place. Bensonhurst Pizza on 17th ave did one, with both stuffed and non-stuffed as options. They didn't last unfortunately.

I had a pretty good pizza at Cast Iron in Bonavista (by the Canyon Meadows cinemas). Medium sized/regular crust with a good ratio of cheese to toppings... and the toppings were plentiful. It was a nice touch that the tomatoes were put on after, fresh... so they weren't slimy when it arrived to my table.

Sorry but that wasn't genuine either.

It's not even possible to stuff crust a genuine Chicago style pizza. The pizza crust should be a relatively thin and crumbly almost pie like crust. The crust isn't really bread like, so there's no place to hide cheese. Then a thick layer of cheese. Then Toppings. Then sauce. Putting the sauce on top doesn't cut it.

In other news, buddy and I tried Carmine's Pizzeria on Northmount Drive the other night.they call it NY style so big pizzas (14" or 18"). I can't comment on the authenticity having never been to NY, but the pizza was good. Good crisp crust and very good sauce. Tried the Bronx and was pleasantly surprised. If you're in the NW by Thorncliff, give it a try!
I tried it recently and it was really good. I can't comment on its authenticity because it's been forever since I've had real NY pizza but the crust was crispy and chewy with tasty cheese and toppings. I will get it again.

WOP and POW are sister restaurants. I'm embarrased that it took me until just now to notice the names are reversed.

Anyone ever have Michael's? Yelp says they have the best GF pizza around, tempted to go try it.

The place on 10th Ave behind(ish) the Tower?

Their pizza is very good and decently priced too. I haven't had their GF (I assume that's gluten free) crust, but their regular stuff is excellent.

Micheals was where the road teams would get pizza from after games at the Dome.

And Michael himself was the guy with a moustache who they used to always show after the Flames scored a goal back in the day.

You can see him here near the end when they pan across the crowd after the game winner (about 6:00 in).
