Dwight? as in his own guy? I mean that's a classic bad guy trope where he's so badass that he can even kill an underling without blinking, but why would he do that now?

If it wasn't even one of Rick's group that would be the most pointless cliffhanger ever and I'm sure the fan outrage would be piqued. I can't imagine they would do something that stupid.

That would be an almost unforgivable copout and I see no way for that to move the plot forward.

I get the impression that Season 7 is going to be a long process of kicking Rick and his group in the nuts over and over and over. Its going to be brutal.

I get the impression that Negan likes having Dwight around. It's a Ramsay/Reek kind of deal.

I thought about that,

Negan did say he wasn't going to kill any of Rick's group IIRC. He would just beat the holy hell out of someone, but it wouldn't really take Rick down a notch if Negan killed one of his own. I'm going to change my vote to Glenn, Daryl and Dwight have some beef to finish next season.

The more I think about it the more I'm thinking Glenn.

It just ticks all the boxes:

- Devastates Rick and motivates him moving forward
- Devastates Daryl because Glenn was only out there because of him, motivates Daryl even more than Dwight
- Devastates Maggie, pushes her to become more 'warrior-like' (haircut, etc.)
- Devastates Abraham who was inspired by Glenn to get with the new world stuff and consider having kids and ergo by extension devastates Sasha

As far as 'moving the plot forward' Glenn just gives the most bang for your buck.

Like someone else mentioned, it seems like by leaving the "who" as a cliffhanger, it will probably cause some emotional detachment by the time season 7 starts.

It makes me think that season 7 might start with a bit of a flashback for the first episode. They can show what happened from the time Daryl, Glenn, Eugene and the rest were captured until the time the execution occurred, but from their point of view. Then they could show the beating from the perspective of the those watching so you see who it is firsthand. And now that Negan is no longer a mystery, they could add filler showing Negan behind the scenes until that moment and develop his character a little.

I realize that it might not advance the story per se, but it might bring back some of the emotional attachment to the person getting Lucille'd.

Oh man...now that you say that...they'll probably do a first episode side-story with Negan and at the end of the episode it'll catch up to where we are now, and cliffhanger until episode 2...ugh.

there is also Carol and Morgan going with the guys in chest protectors, that could be another episode. There is also Alexandria. Maybe we will have to wait for episode 4

Nice. I'll go with that then. I had assumed it was only to fill 90 minutes for commercials - because it felt like a waste of time - something that would have played much better in 60 minutes.
The final 15 minutes, though, was riveting. Brilliant, outstanding drama.

You know what, I was watching the ending again, and again JDM is fantastic. As far as casting goes they hit that one out of the park.

But watching that ending again...is Carl ironclad safe?

Negan says: "If any screams cut the boy's other eye out and feed it to his dad."

That doesnt necessarily mean that it cant be Carl getting the Lucille treatment does it?

It would also check a lot of boxes, not as much as Glenn would with Daryl, Maggie, Abraham and Sasha, but if the story arc for this season is about the devastation of Rick then it would have a lot more impact on him than anyone else would.

Its just been rattling around in the back of my mind as well as, and admittedly I'm sure this has little bearing, it makes more sense based on the eeny-meeny game, where Negan was standing when he starts swinging relative to where Carl was kneeling.

I think you're overanalyzing it, Carl isn't the one getting beaten.

I'm not sure if I can post it but there is an online article in the Sun that was posted on Monday. In it, the showrunner explained why the finale ended the way it did plus a lot of other stuff in there about decisions that went into season 6. I read through it and didn't see any spoilers but just in case... it's out there.

Oh definitely. Its borderline one of those "if you examine the constellations you can triangulate their positions and as such assuming its October in North Eastern Georgia the person being hit with a bat is...."

If it is show related, not comics, and enough time has passed it is cool to post, IMO

I think that would be really dark, even for this show.

I have heard some arguments that because they never showed Glenn during the "eeny, meeny, miney, moe", that it makes sense it was him. I wasn't paying that much attention myself, but I don't recall them showing Carl either for that matter.

Not a chance -- mostly because Rick isn't going to just sit there and watch someone beat his son to death. He'd go ballistic/crazy and get himself killed as well. Then... show over, pretty much.

Both very good points. It was just a feeling I got when I rewatched it and like Hockeyguy said, it could very well be the product over-analysis.

I mean, after watching it the first time I said 'okay, so its not Rick or Carl' and I still feel that it is quite certainly not Rick, but Carl? I dont know. I have firmly shifted to the fence on that one.

It would be dark, it would seriously affect the storyline next season and it would be a fairly violent shift in tone for the show as a whole.

But I'm not yet ready to go back to the concrete statement that it was not Carl without some compelling evidence.
