Ya, hopefully this rain helps.

So we went fishing all morning on the James river near the James-Wilson campground and caught 12 white fish. No signs of trout but the white fish were all over our flies and putting up a good fight too!

I am determined to catch a trout tonight when they start feeding. We some surfacing yesterday so hopefully we can snag one or two tonight.

And we were quite surprised at the number of white fish we caught to. All about 1 to 2lbs and a couple were big enough to eat but it's catch and release only.

That is what they were taking. We floated them down the current and then into the pool, made some sudden jerks and they loved it.

I'm not sure what this fly is called at the moment!

Cool, I wasn't sure what it was called. But it worked! Doesn't work as good in the Bow for white fish.

And the fact that it sunk, was why we caught so many fish.

Caught this brownie on an ice fishing jig whilst trying to get some creek chubs for bait yesterday. The West branch of Onondaga creek runs through the golf course I frequent. This was right next to the cart bridge on the 18th hole

Spoiler!

I saw on Global tonight that this stretch of rain and cold weather is going to help the fishery a lot. That's great news.

Well it looks like Thursday and Friday could be a huge help too. 10 degrees and a lot of rain on Friday, that's good!

I just had a great customer experience with St. Croix rods.

I bought an Imperial Rod back in 2001. Caught a lot of fish and made a lot of great memories with this versatile 4-piece rod.

Yesterday I broke the tip. St. Croix told me today they will replace the rod with a new one - all I have to do is pay for shipping.

So, if you are looking for a great value rod, with an awesome warranty:

http://stcroixrods.com/products/fly-fishing/imperial/

http://midcurrent.com/gear/st-croix-imperial-fly-rods/

But all-in-all, this is a rod that proves you can now get premium performance in a fly rod without having to fork out the same amount of money as you would for a full set of new SUV tires.

Not expensive. Works great.

Do these fishing bans affect stocked ponds? Or is it just rivers and tributaries? I'm thinking of going to Maclean pond this weekend.

You're OK at MacLean I'm sure. It's a stocked pond.

Hopefully none of the fish winterkill this afternoon.

I caught a beautiful 20 inch trout in Auburn Bay. There are some big trout in there.

Sweet calgaryblood, we are going to hit up MacKenzie lake soon, my mom lives there and I know there are some good sized trout in there.

This weekend we are camping in Kananaskis, to the Cataract Creek campground off Highway 40. Has anyone been out there lately?

If it isn't any good then we will be hitting up the Highwood, it will be the first time I have been up there to fish. Looks like we can keep 2 brookies and 5 white fish (30cm or bigger).

Any suggestions for flies in this area?

Angelamc and I enjoyed a great day on H. River.

Caught a cutthroat (or cuttbow) - first fish on my new rod:

Catch of the day for Angelamc:

We caught and lost quite a few rainbows on dry flys and nymphs. One rainbow I caught had the greenest back we ever saw. There was a huge Bull Trout in one pool with a spinner in his mouth. One rainbow I caught was chased in by a larger rainbow. One rainbow I caught was quite the jumper. Saw a few deer cross the river and a couple of ospreys.

Default Cataract

Cataract has been my favorite mountain camping fishing spot for over 30 years. Most don't know about this quiet empty most of the time place. Fishing is excellent for brookies and will take anything from shrimps, flys and love small mepps spinners. For extra fun walk upstream a few miles and you will find some better size up in the deep holes along the walk. There is also a big set of beaver ponds that there is always lots of fish hiding as well on the right side on the way upstream. Don't forget to watch for yogi as there are several in the area.

Those are some beauties! I was talking to a couple real old boys that were fishing on the Oldman here a month ago or so, and they were talking about how when they were younger Dolly's were the dominant species in the creeks, it's all they used to catch. The one fellow said when he was young that if they were under 18" they got put back because they were not worth their time... Too small he said.

Would be nice to see the Dolly's make a comeback, and I think they are. Love catching cutthroats but when you find just the right fly nothing gets as aggressive as a dolly. It's funny when you see a big pig in a hole and he seems to spend all his time chasing cutthroats around.
