Advice Needed - Get Rich Quick (Alberta Style)
Edited.
Condensed version:
I want to get a job on the rigs, ASAP
I know I need tickets such as H2S, Confined Space, and First Aid, before companies will even consider me. I plan on getting those next week. I know nothing about the industry.
After I get my tickets, where do I go to get the best bang for my buck?
So...if anyone has any tips and tricks on where the heck I should begin, it would be greatly appreciated.

All firms should pay the same per CAODC rules/guidelines. You will start at the worst jobs, so be prepared to stick it out for at least a couple months before making any decisions.
Go to the CAODC website for more info.
Only a few months of drilling season left before breakup. There won't be much work post April 1st until the fall.

Just out of curiosity, weren't you killing it with that Visalis thing? Or am I thinking of someone else?

'Twas indeed. Different/greater priorities right now though that require a larger amount of money, and quicker.

Drive to Nisku. Apply at Ensign, Nabors, PD, Iron hand, Savana and Horizon. You will probably have a job before you get to the last place. Dont stop though. You're not working till you're actually in the field so first one to send you out wins.
It's balls out right now. Just get your H2S and go apply. The company will probably pay for any other tickets or let it slide till spring.

No help on the job front, but make sure you take the courses from a reputable company. The H2S course HAS to be accredited through Enform. IIRC not too long ago there were a few companies posing as accredited that weren't, so your ticket wasn't valid. PM if you want the name of a few places.
The two I'd get for sure are first aid & H2S. Everything else is likely provided by the company.
You could also check with some support/contract companies. Cobra, Flint, Big Eagle, etc. Might be some entry-level positions that pay okay.

The two you should get are H2S Alive and CSTS. You're bang on about getting H2S from the right company though. I'd highly recommend going through AIP Safety here in Calgary. They have their training offices just south of Glenmore off Macleod.
If you get William Weese you're in luck, the guy is actually legitimately interested in your safety. Former Firefighter and quite a character.

Just checking if you meant PST instead of CSTS.
I second William Weese with AIP. Have gone through two courses with him instructing, the knowledge sticks and he ensures you know your stuff. I always treat safety courses as being more than just a ticket. You'll need to use the theory one day, just who knows when, so don't cheap out.

Get your H2S, CSTS and First-Aid, those are all mandatory to work up north. Some companies will let 1 of them slide until days off if they are in a pinch but most won't.
A lot of companies will require you to pass a drug test as well before sending you to site.
Good luck, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding work as it's crazy right now but you more than likely won't be working past April since it's your first year.

Thanks for all the advice.
Big thanks for that CAODC website. What a wealth of knowledge.
I honestly didn't really want to work past April, so that works out well.
I applied for AIP's H2S today. Just waiting now to see if there's room.
Question about First Aid: Does it have to be Emergency or Standard?
AIP doesn't have First Aid Classes. Any suggestions on where to go?

Another option is to apply at the various service companies. Pumping service companies like Trican, Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Sanjel, etc. are always looking for people to work on their frac, cementing, or coiled tubing crews. Each of these companies has an office in Red Deer you can approach. The work could potentially be more permanent. If you have a choice, choose frac as they work much cushier hours than cementers. Having a Class 1 license would virtually guarantee you employment at one of those companies.
