Air France 66, an A380 operating Paris-LAX declared an emergency over northern Quebec and landed in Goose Bay. The number 4 engine appears to have lost its cowling and there was also reported damaged to the leading edge. Landed safely.

Looks like the “event” happened over Greenland. FR24 playback shows them starting a descent to FL310 over the SW part Greenland.

The link has a photo showing the A380 on the ground in Labrador with clear shot of the engine and wing.

The entire inlet and fan is missing from the GE /PW engine. FL370 over Greenland makes a "bird strike" unlikely. Bearing, stubpipe, blade failure(s) or a combination would be my guess.

Engine cutaway:

Qantas A380 Trent engine failure explanation:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/flig...minary-report/

There are sensors for vibration, bearing lubrication, oil pressures thought the engine that monitor and track each parameter. All controlled through the FADEC system. So they should be able to come up with an answer. Even though the Qantas failure was on the ground and this one precludes the examination of missing parts.

This was posted as a comment on the KLM video. They denied the request.

(I presume/hope that's a Google translation, lol)

Sadly, KLM denied your request.

Dutch newsarticle:
Vliegtuig 'The City of Calgary' mag van KLM niet naar Calgary - http://nos.nl/l/2195734

The title translates to: Airplane 'The City of Calgary' isn't permitted by KLM to go to Calgary

"Such a one-time flight has an excessive impact on the rest of our fleet operation. On Calgary, other types of aircraft fly. If we use the 747-400 then we dupe too many passengers on our other scheduled flights."

I never can quite get comfortable flying - been on hundreds of flights and it's something about being 10km above the ground going Mach 0.8. Safest way to travel - worst way to visit St. Peter.

Don't recall seeing this in the news, but last week an Encore Q400 was coming back from Nanaimo to Calgary and hit severe turbulence over the mountains, violently throwing both flight attendants. One has a shattered leg and is still in the hospital.

Awesome, a Greyhound with wings. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't likely to result in a race to the bottom with other carriers.

What's their slogan going to be?

"We pay the lowest wages in the industry and pinch every penny on maintenance, Come Fly With Us!"

I only wish low cost carriers had the legroom of a Greyhound. Given that Westjet management has a history of few maintenance violations and/or investigations from Transport Canada. Cheap doesn't mean unsafe. In addition they are starting with new fuel efficient AC vr some old desert castoff with a new paint job.

What needs to be addressed is the federal government milking the Canadian air traveler through airport rents and security/traveling fees.

Did it land already? FlightAware still says "Scheduled", and FR24 lists the arrival time as 1510 still.

Don't think so, a WS person on the facebook page said to expect it after 4pm today but now the flight plan is showing that old flight on Flightaware. I wonder if they scrapped it for today?

Easy for some to forget that airlines optimise their networks - there generally aren't extra's lying around (they don't make money on the ground).

I was surprised that AF managed to immediately dispatch two 777s to pick up the poor stranded bugger's at YYR.

Yeah, for sure. Planes cost money, and they only make money flying in the air, not on the ground.

Especially with something as large as the 744, they never have extras, so that plane is going to be needed on higher density routes.

I wish they'd bring it here for a retirement flight, but again...that costs money.

Landed yesterday at 1717, according to FlightAware.

There's another flightplan filed for today...are they getting a third?
