Yeah but is it really? I think after the 4th round, it's all just a massive crap shoot.

The following are the best players the Flames have drafted in either the 6th or 7th rounds (within recent history):

Brossoit (6th round)
McElhinney (6th round)
Pardy (6th round)
Van Der Gulik (7th round)
Moss (7th round)

A 6th and 7th are basically the same asset in my books.

okay.. sure... yeah.. but how can you say getting back a 7th is huge.. when we gave up a 6th... at best its even value... and basically meaningless.

I know you said recent but Gary Suter Brett Hull and Theoren Fleury were okay NHLers

Terrific move by Brad Treliving. It's a low risk, high reward transaction. Lack has the potential to be a very reliable backup and Murphy has the potential to be a formidable #6 with PP quarterbacking skills. Bravo!

Ryan Murphy's quality of competition is somewhat high for a guy randomly thrown into this trade. I've included the Flames' defensemen and centers, the top 10 Selke finalists, and top 10 Norris finalists:

I imagine next year, if he makes the team, his usage will be closer to where Bartkowski and Kulak are on this chart (fewer offensive zone starts, but less matching up to second lines and such), which might help open up his game. Will be interesting to see what we have, any time you're adding a former first round pick.

Pretty much every of the washed out scrubs the Flames have had in net have put up numbers as good or better than Lacks last two years. Basically he's had the same stats that got Joni Ortio a one way ticket back to Europe.

Peters called out Lack after the Canes game against Tampa on March 1. In that game, Carolina outshot Tampa 31-16 and lost 4-3 in OT.

At that time, Lack was ranked 60th in Save Percentage (and 58th in GAA) out of 60 goalies in the league who had played at least 10 games. His Save Percentage following that game was 0.873.

Lack did respond after that.

From that point to the end of the season, Lack played 10 more games and had a 0.925 Save Percentage in those games. This was good for 9th overall in the League during that time (Elliott was 8th at 0.926). He was 6th in GAA (2.09) during that time. His record was 6-3-1 in those 10 games.

Rob Vollman‏ @robvollmanNHL
Just noticed that 2 of the 3 goalies who climb the 3-Yr SV% rankings the most when adjusting for shot quality are Lack and Smith.

Yeah, and I say this as a Swede, but let's keep this one on the bench.

Sssh....we want those no goods to the North to keep thinking the Flames goaltending has gotten worse.....Just so they can be happy in their delusions a bit longer.

Yeah but look at those offensive starts. The one thing that's telling about offensive starts is that the coach doesn't trust you in your own end. It basically means you have 150ft of cushion to contribute in preventing bad things from happening.

That's REALLY bad for a defensemen.

Rob Vollman has a good mind for analytics. It's no surprise the goalies from the lousiest teams in the past few years don't look like quality goalies when looking at simple Sv% data, but good teams keep snipers like Crosby from getting pure wide open shots and expecting a save.

Another thing I like about this trade is that the Flames were able to upgrade a non-NHL calibre 3rd round pick defenceman for a fringe NHLer 1st round pick defenceman all by taking on just over a million in salary for a backup goalie they needed anyways.

I also don't get the deal from a Canes perspective. The could have just bought Lack out and tried to trade Murray for a 4th rounder.

Here goes the puns - there's no lack of changes in the backend this offseason; but the Flames are still lacking a first line right winger!

I'm really liking this acquisition. And not just because we're sending Keegan Kanzig far, far away. Lack will have something to prove and the change of scenery will no doubt help him. I'd also be lying if I said I wasn't excited about what Lack's gear will look like; he's a Brian's guy and I'll take his style over the "all red" Hiller/Elliott look that has given us all PTSD:
