Router recommendations

It looks like my router has died. It's less than a year old, so I believe it under warranty (D-Link Model WBR-2310). It was often wonky and I'd prefer something that's actually reliable.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I heard D-Link was a decent brand name or perhaps I have a lemon.

There are various revisions of the WRT54G out there. Can't remember what mine was but it's a couple years old. I've had a few friends who had similar problems that I encountered.

Basically, I had a couple wireless connections and a wired connection that was pretty active. When just one connection was active doing a little web surfing, I had no problems. When the router actually had to route (i.e., when more than one connection was active or there was a lot of heavy downloading) it would crap out and reset itself. I updated the firmware to some non-Linksys stuff and it made the problem less prevalent.

Recently I've encountered problems again after a power surge. The damn thing wouldn't work at all for about a week and then, suddenly with no warning, it worked again. It goes in and out of commission a couple times a week now.

It just seems like it's too hit or miss for me to recommend it to anyone else. There are newer Linksys models out there that I haven't tried so YMMV.

I've had pretty good luck with Linksys, including the WRT54G model fredr123 has had problems with. I stay away from D-Link, as I have had no luck actually getting a product from them that has worked properly.

I've been using that for a while (with 3rd party firmware), and the only issues I had turned out to be with the signal from Telus. Other than that, it has worked fine.

But you are correct about the versions - there were at least 6 revisions (th elatest, they didn't use a linux based firmware so it couldn't be switched to a 3rd party firmware)

I've been using the Dlink DIR-625 for a year without any problems with the router itself. But I wish I bought a Linksys just so I could flash the bios into a better system.

Thing is, we get what we pay for in the router market. All home use, "budget" routers are going to suffer reliability problems. Though I've heard a lot of good things about Netgear products.

For every person I've heard with a good experience, I have also heard a bad experience, and vice versa.

I haven't heard of any brand where there is a consensus. Home wireless routers seem more hit and miss than most other products. Usually there is a general trend, but other than the odd bad model it doesn't seem like you can make the generalization Brand X > Brand Y

I had a Netgear router years ago. No wireless, but one of the best ones I ever had.

I have Netgear POE Powerline adapters, work very good.

I have used the WRT54G - cant say enough good things about it, although I did have an issue connecting my e360's to my VHP Media Centre.

Only a few experiences with DLink, 2 bad 2 fine.

That's what I have always assumed, too. That's why I decided to pay a little more for my now dead, Dlink.

Geez and i swear by dlink, the 2 i have bought have been superb, I had 3 different WRT54Gs and none of them worked properly, then i went out and bought a linksys WRT150N, and it worked even worse the wireless went out multiple times per day and the wired connections were almost as wonky of course the GF through out the recipet and boxes so i couldn't return it.

Now i am running the DIR-615 and am extremely pleased. 4 months running it and only power cycled it once and that was only cause the cable went out on me and i just assumed it was the router

My experience so far with routers, going back to when Shaw first introduced high speed in Calgary, and a basic wired router cost $240 at Memory Express, I would rank them as follows: Apple < Linksys < DLink

Just my experience in terms of reliability, and mostly, day to day stability.

If I had to do it again, I'd likely buy a small office/home office router from Cisco and be done with consumer level gear.

I'm trying to get wireless so I can hook up my xbox 360, any router in particular work well with the 360? Does it have to be a wireless G or can it be N?
