Default Pixelated Picture

I have a jpg and I want to print it very large but when I do it becomes very pixilated. Does anyone know a way to clean this up so that I can print it and make it look good.

You can't enlarge something digitally, without it going pixelated, unless its a vector (illustrator eps image). You might be able to scan it again, at a really high resolution and bigger size, or create it as a vector image. Thats about your only option. YOu can pm me the image if you'd like, and i can see if i can help you.

Despite what you see on CSI, you cant add pixels to a raster image. There's x amount by Y amount at whatever dpi and that's all you get. You can rescale instead of resizing the image and have software interpolate but that doesn't typically work very well.

If you can live with it and you want to print really large, use rasterbator.

http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/

You will never get the same quality when enlarging something for print.

In an old Digital Photography book I have, they recommended a program called Genuine Fractals to do what you want. As stated, one cannot simply zoom in and create more pixels. But there are likely heuristics that can be used to estimate the pixels, and render a better image than a simple enlargement.

A Google reveals : http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=2

There are some nifty examples there. The software is pricey ($160), but there is a demo version. Not sure what restrictions are on the demo.

I like csi, but I will put my head in my hands and take a deep breath about 2-3 times per episode.

As mentioned above, you basically need to create pixels where pixels do not exist, so a computer program can only make a "guess" based off of surrounding pixels to fill in the spaces. Whenever faced with such a problem, 9 times out of 10 I just go to istock and buy something similar.

So you're saying that CSI can depixelate this rasterized girl if they recreate her as a vector?

This is pretty nerdy but since we're in the Tech Talk forum and its related, I assume its safe to post

A really cool resizing algorithm was present at last year's SIGGRAPH:

I'm not sure if its available for download or not though...

I went to Adobe Max last year and they had that guy do a presentation, and they announced that Adobe had recently hired him. My guess would be that we'll be seeing this technology in the next version of Photoshop.
