I always thought that if the Toronto or SW Ontario region area got another team, they should go with "Ontario", or even a play on historical regional names like "Upper Canada" similar to "New England" or "Golden State".

I seem to recall the Avalanche wanted to be named Front Range or Rocky Mountain or something like that but NHL didn't like it.

That is the most 90s concept ever. I assume it was teal and purple.

Remember the Oilers started out as the Alberta Oilers.

Would Whiney Brett Wilson be selling his stake as well (if he still has)?

Official word from the Preds: https://www.nhl.com/predators/news/b...rs/c-334643794
Haslam will initially purchase a minority stake in the club, which will eventually become a majority stake through a "multi-phased purchase transaction".
It seems like it will remain an ownership group. The ownership group is currently made up of 17 people, so it wouldn't be surprising to see that number shrink after Haslam completes the purchase.

I think I recall reading that the original intention was to have them split games between Edmonton and Calgary, but that never materialized and hence the name was changed. Is that correct?

That's the story I've heard as well.

This is correct.
The Calgary Broncos were initially to be part of the original WHA as well, but folded before ever coming to fruition.
So the Oilers team was branded "Alberta" and were supposed to split games between the Corral and the old Edmonton arena (Gardens IIRC?).
$$ dictated that games only be played in Edmonton however (rightfully IMO) and the next season the team adopted that city's name.

Bill Haslam supported and passed anti-LGBTQ laws as Governor of Tennessee.
I thought the NHL was taking a strong position against this type of discrimination.

Every major corporation takes a stance against discrimination unless......money.
Look at the Saudi backed LIV golf league starting up. Golfers happily taking money from human rights abusing killers because they're willing to spend their corrupt and bloodstained earnings to create a "good" image in the west, while attempting to take over a sport.
Insane in theory, but hey, if someone comes along and says here's $200mil? Everyone has their price. So far the biggest d*****bags in golf are the ones that have their price. But eventually so does everyone.

It's just business for these guys, Who gives a bleep who writes the cheque. Not a single person wouldn't take that kind of money to play a game. Doesn't matter the sport.
Most of the money we have in the world is farmed by "Human rights abusing killers".
Hell if they started a hockey league in north America and offered nhls best players 50M a season, they'd take it too.
