Center was our weakest position this year, and your lineup is making it worse. And we won't have as deep of a supporting cast next year (due to cap constraints)

Defense matters too, especially in the bottom 6. Ruzicka isn't Monahan, and there is yet no evidence that Phillips can play in the NHL. But sure, maybe they get better over the summer.

Traded Monahan and Valimaki for Dvorak
Traded Mangiapane and Phillips for Beauvillier and Mayfield

Signed Gaudreau for 9.25/8
Signed Tkachuk for 9.25/8
Signed Kylington for 2.0/1
Room for two minimum wage goons

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Beauvillier - Dvorak - Toffoli
Pelletier - Backlund - Coleman
Lucic - Ruziscka - Dube
Goon

Hanafin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Mackie - Mayfield
Goon

Markstrom
Vladar

Lucic is not going to retire. One of the RFA/UFA had to go, so I sold high on Mangiapane, and bought low on Mayfield and Beauvillier. Realistic trade for Dvorak, sending Monahan and Valimaki. Kylington has to take a bridge and bank on himself to swing that Lucic money the next year.

Comes in just under cap.

Rosie is probably better right now than the current version of Monahan.

Phillips seems to be doing quite nicely in Stockton right now, and that team is about to go on a nice playoff run.

Lots of players do quite nicely in the AHL and can't do squat in the NHL. It remains absolutely true that Phillips hasn't proved anything at the NHL level.

I could be wrong but I don’t see Gaudreau signing for anything less than 10M.

Aren't they currently the top team in the Pacific with those same top-six centres? Didn't Ruzicka play a significant stretch at 3C on this top team?

Really the only significant difference there is going from Lewis/Monahan to Phillips, which I agree is weird because Phillips has almost exclusively been a RW as a pro. If you shifted Phillips to wing and signed a younger upgrade on Lewis to play 4C for less than a million, though ... you're probably just fine.

And the only way for Phillips to prove he's anything in the NHL is to actually play in the NHL (although I agree, not at centre). He's earned a shot with his AHL production. In this thread already we've seen people slot a far inferior player in Walker Duehr onto the roster...

Capfriendly had Phillips listed as a center, hence the confusion.

Put Gawdin at C and Phillips at RW, problem solved. Or if Phillips can't cut it at the NHL level, play Lewis in that spot instead.

Or just play Jarnkrok and Ruzicka as your #3 and #4 Cs.

Yeah....I can totally see Darryl Sutter going with one of, if not the, smallest forwards who has one game of NHL experience on his 4th line where he has consistently put big, tough and/or hard to play against guys.

Phillips is top 2 lines or nothing im guessing.

If I'm Gawdin, there's no way I'm sticking around. I'm a pending UFA stuck way down on the depth chart with a team that probably won't give me another NHL shot.

I'd bet on Gawdin angling for a two-year deal somewhere else with the second year maybe being one-way. I'd be really surprised if he's here next year.

Could be a number of inexpensive options for the lower parts of the roster/farm this summer, as I expect a number of North American/Western European players opting out of the KHL.

How do you say he proves himself at the NHL level…without actually playing at the NHL level?

I don't think you're wrong. If Treliving manages to lock him up under $10M AAV then it's a win. Even then, it will look more like $9.9 than $9.1. All anyone has to do is look at the top contracts in the league and do some quick comparisons.

Pretty simple and i think Sutter would answer the same way.

Come to camp and steal someones job. Barring that, get called up and when he gets a chance, make it so he cant be sent down again.

In fact he kind of said as much today in regards to both Dube and Ruzicka in getting them getting more ice and playing up the lineup.

Well, they're going to have to waive him at the start of next season if they aren't willing to give him a legitimate NHL opportunity over a bigger sample than 2–3 preseason games. I can see how Phillips might've cleared last year after his AHL production dipped on a depleted team in a shortened season, but he's the highest-scoring 23-and-under player in the minors by a decent margin this year.

I'd love to hear appropriate justification for why the Flames would elect to give up on their most productive Stockton Heat prospect ever without first rewarding him with an opportunity, even in a bottom-six role. Sure seems to me like that would be a no-win scenario.

I would also say scoring 58 points in 51 AHL games is the equivalent of breaking the door down during the season, especially for an audition after the NHL club clinches home ice. Is that going to happen? It should (and probably won't).

Hopefully the Flames win the cup and then Lucic decides to go out a champ.

I wonder if we see a Monahan/Debrusk swap of some sort in the off season...

For starters, not by playing out of position on a line whose primary responsibilities are defensive.

He certainly can't be your only option for that position, or you are asking for a world of hurt.

I say you don't pencil his name in the roster until you need to erase someone else's name.

If Gaudreau signs an eight-year deal, he'll be 36 in its last year. I bet he would very seriously consider a back-diving contract (within the current rules). Something like this:

11, 11, 11, 11, 11, 11, 7.5, 5.5

Total: $79 million over 8 years, 9.88 AAV. For any other team to match the first seven years of that deal, they would be looking at an AAV of 10.35. He could get that, but it would make it that much harder for his new team to pay a winning roster, which, I believe, is also something he cares about.

Debrusk could be traded for draft capital if they chose. Why would they give positive value for a cap dump?
