Which Flame should be selected to the All-Star Game?
Note that the title says "should", not "will".
I'm asking this question because of the recent surges of Mikael Backlund, Matthew Tkachuk, and Dougie Hamilton. We all assume that Gaudreau will be selected to the ASG (and he probably will) but do you think that there are more deserving candidates on the Flames?
Right now, I see six potential candidates to go from the Flames:
- Gaudreau
- Backlund
- Frolik
- Tkachuk
- Hamilton
- Johnson
I'd say that two will go at max.
I remember that when he was on his winning streak, there was a big movement to vote him to the ASG. Are there two goalies with better records in the Pacific?
Hamilton has emerged as this team's #1D, for now. Are there three better defensemen in the division.
And then there are the forwards. IIRC, the rookies-only component of the ASG has been removed, but Tkachuk is one of this team's best point producers. Still, he's a definite long shot.
Backlund leads the team in scoring, with one more point and ten more GP than Gaudreau. Is there a chance he goes?
About a month ago, NHL.com named Frolik to their presumptive ASG, over Gaudreau and everyone else on this list. I'd say his odds have lowered considerably since, though.
And then, of course, there's #13.
What are your thoughts? How many Flames do you think go, and who?

It's Gaudreau and Hamilton for me.
Second in points for defensemen in the Pacific and has been great overall.

Gaudreau because he sells tickets. He might not be #1 in scoring, but nobody buys tickets to see guys like Backlund or Frolik play.... and I'm a huge fan of those two.
Hamilton because he might be the best young defenceman in the division now.

Think Dougie deserves it, but the player that should and most deserves it is Backlund. He's been great this year and has earned it.

Hamilton or Backlund.
Realistically, though, I feel like Backlund would be passed over for a bigger name.

Deryk Engelland. Let's CP jihad and "John Scott" him in.

Backlund for sure. Leads the team in points. Has been consistently all year long.
Also surprised to see Tkachuk is third on the team.

Definitely Backlund.
You know he would love it and his play this year deserves the recognition.
Plus he leads the team in two way play, heart, desire, goals and points.

Just Gaudreau...maybe a 20% chance of Dougie.
Frolik and Backlund are definitely having great years but they're not playing at an all-star level that will get them chosen over big names with the fans. Johnson had a strong case but his recent slide and with Elliott taking over, his chances are really hurt. Tkachuk has played well but with being a rookie with only 24 points, his chances are pretty much non-existent.

I hope Hamilton does, just so the Maple Leaf fanbase can see how silly they were for thinking Kadri for Hamilton was a "fair".
Realistically, Gaudreau will probably make it. Backlund probably should. Tkachuk is one of the top rookies as well. Contrary to popular belief, Matthews isn't the only one with an 8 game point streak.

Backlund is the most deserving, but in terms of entertainment value I would pick Johnny.

You know when Backlund is your all star candidate that it's been a tough season and that's not to slight Backlund as the team's best players have not been very good at all this season and outside of Backlund there's not a single player remotely close to all star caliber this season.

Johnny's in for sure. The whole event is as much a skills competition as it is the game itself. In fact I'd say the skills competition generates more interest. You want guys like Johnny when you're selling the sizzle.
Hamilton perhaps. Backlund a bit more of a long shot.
