Default Francis: Flames plan on carrying 10 defencemen soon

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...ring-playoffs/

Quote:
Unlike the three-headed goalie monster the Flames employed several seasons back with horrific consequences, the abundance of back-enders is something every team would cherish.

Any deep playoff run requires plenty of manpower at the back due to the war of attrition NHL clubs go through each spring.

Treliving insists all nine will stay in town for the balance of the year.

He said he’ll soon need one of his four precious call-ups to summon first-round hotshot Juuso Valimaki from Stockton.

“We actually have 10 defencemen when you think about it,” said Treliving of the left-shooting Valimaki, who is flourishing in the minors following a lengthy recovery from a high ankle sprain.

Ten defensemen!! Crazy. I can't build out the left side depth chart either.

Right side depth
Brodie
Hamonic
Andersson
Stone
Prout

Left side depth
Gio
Hanifin
Fantenberg or Kylington or valimaki
Fantenberg or Kylington or valimaki

Stone and Fantenberg as the final paring on defence would be my guess going into the playoffs.

Flames definitely have some amazing options at d...

i do think that it might be worth having mix and match in the games remaining in the year. Fantenberg has been better than i thought to be honest...

if you imagine that Valimaki can play like he did at the beginning of the year, that's really an amazing addition...

Gio/Andersson
Hamonic/Hanifin
Brodie/Valimaki

and STILL having the option of using Fantenberg, Kylington, Stone or Prout? I think maybe Brodie should sit for a game as well, Calgary has the horses to do that and it might give him a chance to see the game from a different perspective.

its a great feeling

You don't. Have him paired with Gio and make Brodie the odd man out.

That's my guess of our top 7 come playoffs. Brodie just hasn't been reliable.

Brodie needs to be healthy scratched for a game. It's happened multiple times to Frolik, for less egregious missteps. Stone/Valimaki sounds like a fine 3rd pair to me.

Valimaki-Brodie could be a good pairing.

Brodie should play but just on the third pairing.

Brodie will not sit during the playoffs. He's one of 5 players that were part our most recent playoff win with Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund and Bennett. Not only that he is definatly one of our best 6 Dmen this season.

I do think we trade him in the offseason but he is still an important guy we will count on until then.

It will be interesting to see how much patience Peters will have for Brodie in the playoffs. In the regular season coaches tend to give the veterans rope because they are looking at the 82 game picture. In the playoffs where every single game matters and every major defensive gaffe also matters one has to wonder if he has a stinker if the coach is pro-active and demotes/sits him or gambles that he will follow up with a better effort.

I realize a couple of these guys are UFA at the end of the season, but you still have to think that Treliving is going to turn around some of this D depth for something else the team needs.

Picks, prospects, goalie, top 6 forward.

Brodie and/or Stone come to mind immediately as trade bait.

Brodie has younger players ready to do his job perhaps better already for far cheaper, I can’t see him here to start next year.
