This is a strange situation. Fantenberg has been good but I’m still confused why we got him.

Gio looked off last night (vs Knights) I would like to see him rested for the playoffs.

It's because the team has a lot of young blue liners and the management believes we will have a long playoff run and that we will lose blue liners to injury along the way.
I also have to say, I like Fantenberg.

^^^ Initially? Depth D who can slot in and play important minutes in the playoffs if we need him in case of injury. Played well against Vegas in a playoff environment, etc

Yeah I'm a bit surprised they've recalled Stone already since they could have had him playing games in the AHL for another week - makes me wonder if they plan on swapping him in for on some games already. It wouldn't be a bad idea to rotate through the depth players through the rest of the season to let people heal up minor injuries (ie. Brodie) - ideally we can do this without it impacting us in the standings though.
I'm not sure if a Stone/Andersson 3rd pairing is a great idea though - I seem to recall that not being a great pairing in the past (though who knows how it would look now that Andersson has quite a few more games under his belt). For the rest of the regular season, it might make sense to do Gio/Andersson and Brodie/Stone (which did alright in the past) - the real question is do you think Andersson is capable of handling first pairing duties in the playoffs.

Part of it might just be that Stone has a family in Calgary. Given his druthers I'd imagine he'd rather sit here than play there and be away from the wife and kids. And maybe he's ready to go.

I don't think too many people would argue with this. Brodie didn't actually play to bad last time he was playing 3rd pairing and he and Stone have history together.

It kind of sucks that Stone is a righty because he might bump Ras out of his spot. Although we did have 2 right D on the bottom pair with Brodie-Prout although Brodie was back to his natural side. The bottom pair now has a lot of options.
Andersson/Stone/Prout - Fantenberg/Kylington. Even more options if Ras has another stint on the top pairing.
Nice problem to have, having too many NHL quality defensemen.

Andersson isn't coming out at this point.
I feel like we'll see some combination of the following lineups going forward:
Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Fantenberg - Andersson
OR
Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Hamonic
Brodie - Stone
OR
Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Hamonic
OR
Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Hamonic
Brodie - Prout
Probably the first two more frequently.

Michael Stone was a healthy scratch while Andersson played games in his spot at the beginning of the season. He is not now suddenly supplanting him in his first game back from IR after having missed more than two months.

I am surprised how little love Stone gets here. He is a good, solid player with a howitzer shot from the blue-line and great work ethics. When he was healthy and played regularly, he was good as a 4th and excellent as a 5th. I understand the excitement about having more (and younger) players available, which is not a luxury we have had for a long time, but it is almost turning towards some dismissing Stone already as a reject in favour of younger guys. I hope Stone gets healthy and plays a lot. Every team needs players like Stone during playoffs.

Agreed Stone will be very important come playoffs and I think his effectiveness is understated here. The young ones have done well, but they are not without their gaffs. Stone has his moments too, but his physicality is something missing from the 3 youngsters.

Stone gives you a different look on your back end, and can eat up minutes on the PK. Could also plug him into the second unit PP if things go stale. Hope he comes in fresh and ready to play -- the guys in front of him have done very well but we'll soon be into the home stretch and they need to be fresh too.
P.S. I love Rasmus and he's played great, but how good is Gio that we can plug in a rookie D onto the top pair and really not miss a beat.
