Friedman's 31 thoughts - Feb 19 - Flames are a stealth destination for Duchene?
https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...-matt-duchene/
Flames related:
If he had to choose a stealth destination for Duchene it would be the Isles or Calgary.
Columbus and Nashville are in it for sure. Not convinced Winnipeg is interested.
Columbus' offer for Duchene includes Wennberg
Preds will try to keep Duchene long term if they acquire him.
Sens came with 5 yrs @ $10.5 mil per to Stone.
Winnipeg and Calgary will be in on Stone
Kypreos reported Neal will be out a while.
wonders if like Kane in 2015, Neal returns for the playoffs where the salary cap doesn't matter and that Treliving is investigating the possibilites
Speculates that Patrik Nemeth might be the depth LHD that Calgary is looking for
Treliving is being careful with goaltenders
wants to bolster Smith's and Rittich's confidence, not rattle them
list of teams looking at both Zuccarello and Simmonds: BOS, CGY, SJ, PIT, VGK

If Neal goes on LTIR, the Flames could sign a very pricy rental.

I'm really adverse to giving up one of our young guys on D. I know you have to give to get, but I've got the homerism attachment :-(

If Calgary trades for Duchene I bet we will somehow miss the playoffs. No thanks.

Duchene's a pure rental and would cost a ton. After trading 2 of our last 4 1sts and several 2nds and 3rds already, I'd hate to give up even more good futures for Duchene.

Strange comment from Friedman after the Nemeth mention. brings up Treliving being cautious about goaltending but that particular thought didn't even bring it up. Just D. Feels like something is missing there. Kicking tires on Varlamov?

other rumors:
Dzingel's future is tied with Stone decision
more will be known about Ceci closer to the deadline
McQuaid trade talks gaining traction
stealth team for Panarin is Dallas who also checked in on Zuccarello
best chances at signing Panarin long term: FLA, LA, NYI, NYR
Boston and Isles could be rental options
If Isles don't get Panarin, Lou might look at Kovalchuk
If Blues don't get Duchene, focus will shift to Hayes
One possibility to move Bobvrosky is an extension in exchange for waiving his full NMC.
Columbus recently tried another extension attempt but not looking good
Oilers resisted lowball offers on Puljujarvi but the player is not happy there
Avs are trying to move Andrighetto
Leafs haven't stopped looking at right hand d options
teams checking in on Johansson: CBJ, EDM, SJ, VAN, and maybe WSH
Canucks have looked at Burakovsky potentially replacing injured Baertschi
Caps are looking for this year's Kempny
Canes probably can't trade Ferland anymore so close to the playoffs, certainly not to PIT
Canes could whip up a frenzy by taking a run at Eric Staal but Wild may not do another trade with the Canes after Rask/Niederrieter
DET has asked Nyquist for a list of teams he'd consider
Frk might find a new home too

I know the weird stigma that surrounds Duchene but he is immediately probably our best centerman and is more dynamic than Monahan.

If Stone is going to get $10.5 million, then that pretty much eliminates the Flames from signing him.

Well, I'll tell you what;
If we somehow land Matt Duchene, I'll gladly take that bet.

I think the stigma is complete hogwash to be honest.
He turned down 8x8 from Ottawa because he wants a chance to play on a winning team, not a rebuilding team - which is all he’s been a part of. He joined the Senators while the tire fire was already burning (Karlsson/Hoffman/Junk Owner) after spending years on a rebuilding Avalanche team that are still a fringe playoff team at best.
Taylor Hall, Evander Kane are just two names who previously had similar stigmas. It’s not their fault, nor is it Duchene’s fault that they’ve all played for crappy organizations. This is Duchene’s chance to fix that, just like how Kane did last year. Duchene wants to win, and would be an awesome get.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Jankowski
Bennett - Duchene - Neal
Mangiapane - Ryan - Hathaway
Those are 4 lines that could decimate. Duchene + Bennett would be awesome to see.
That said, I like the Stone fit better due to age and the fact that he’d take Tkachuk + Backlund to the next level.

He (Stone) might be more reasonable for any team other than Ottawa. Who knows.

5@10.5 = 52.5
8@8.75 = 70
I could see that working

That is not quite right. When Duchene was traded to Ottawa the Senators were in the midst of a strong start to the season, and coming off a playoff appearance in which they were a Conference finalist—they lost in Game 7 by a single goal. This was well before the Hoffman/Karlsson drama had erupted, and there was plenty of optimism surrounding the team’s near future when that trade occurred. It all fell apart pretty quickly thereafter.

If 10.5M for 5 years is on the table, Stone should take that and run.
