I'm surprised it's him and not Gravel or Petrovic. Maybe they think he's the one who's most-likely to get claimed.

Either that, or Connor wasn't as happy about playing with the guy who broke his neck as we were led to believe.

Didn't the Oilers just trade an asset to get Benning or am I thinking of someone else?

Matheson should be all over this one too, he had a few tweets yesterday claiming how good Keith was at getting things done and scoffed at the notion Keith was there because his brother has a statue outside the building.

Keith is certainly skillfully plotting his own course. Just simply undo things that Chia did, and since he's been tarred and feathered and can't defend himself, in part doing these moves thanks to the terrible situation Lowe had him in when he joined on, and everyone will praise you for making thses totally inconsequential moves.

Oilers traded Cagguilla to get Manning, if that's who you meant to refer to.

Benning was drafted by Boston but not signed and signed with Edmonton.

The best part is that Manning still has 2.25 million next year.

They trade Caligula who could have gotten a 4th or a 5th at the deadline for a negative value player.

Why would we do the Oilers a favour?

Let them pay him 2.25 next year as a healthy scratch!

Amazing how harsh the Edmonton media is to Chiarelli now that he's gone. They just can't stop piling on the guy now meanwhile up to 2 weeks before he was fired they were still giving him a shot.

This Manning trade was terrible the second it was made - everyone knew it. Did the Edmonton media call Chiarelli an idiot then?

This is the PR campaign to detract from upper management awfulness.

As much as the Oilers press have been told to dump all blame for trades, goalies, and the Vancouver outbreak of measles on Chia, here is Staples article at time of trade.

https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/h...jerk-reactions

I haven’t seen enough of Petrovic or Manning to have any kind of sound opinion on their play, but Chiarelli’s assessment seems sober enough. The idea is bring in a couple defensive d-men who can bolster the Oil in an area of massive weakness. It’s not a terrible idea. In fact, it’s a damn good idea — it’s why I had hoped the Oilers would bring back dependable Brandon Davidson last summer. Of course, these trade only work if Petrovic and Manning perform. Can they be as useful as Davidson was last year when he stepped in on the third-pairing? That’s what the Oilers need. So we’ll see.

...

Hitchcock said he talked to Joel Quenneville and to Manning’s Philadelphia coach and knows what the player can and can’t bring. “He’s a no nonsense, third pair guy that can build good minutes for you and plays very honest and holds himself and others accountable, which is good for us.”
Bottom line on these trades for now: I really like it that Hitchcock liked these trades. In Hitch I trust, for now at least.

Wasn’t long ago that Edmonton fans and media were calling Chia a genius for firing McLellan and hiring Hitchcock.
