Trade a goalie who was 4th in Vezina voting not 2 seasons ago for a guy who spent time in the East coast league last year

This is really funny.

In all these years of Oiler no goodness there was one thing management got right. The Talbot trade. It is always risky trading for another team’s backup to be your starter but for Edmonton it actually worked out and the cost was reasonable. Talbot had a great first season and then an even better 2nd one dragging the Oilers to the 2nd round.

Of course then the Oilers stink finally gets to Talbot and here we are today with a salary dump trade for an AHL goalie. Not even Cam Talbot could save the Edmonton Oilers. No one can.

Could be worse! They could have dealt the goalie that finished 3rd in Vezina and fourth in Hart Trophy voting two years earlier for a goon... oh wait they did that too... okay well at least they got something for a goalie with a .934% this year in Winnipeg... Oh you say they got nothing for him???

Yes, changes of scenery can help goaltenders. But, as a general rule, not when the goaltender is going to either Edmonton or Philadelphia.

Talbot and Hart trained together in the offseason in Edmonton. Hart considers him a mentor.

Hart + Talbot is a better looking tandem than Hart + Stolarz going into next year. Talbot is the best veteran depth goalie on the market, is a good fit, should be cheap and likely to sign.

Good trade.

It’s gonna be wicked when he signs here in the offseason and regains his form from 2016/2017

Agreed. If you guys can re-sign him then you did quite well here.

Elliott is going through an AHL stint currently.. what happens once he's back? Surely nobody is going to take him?

great trade for Philly, this could be a steal for them. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Talbot could regain his form there ... actually, given that it's Edmonton, I'd be more surprised if he didn't. Re-signing him and having Talbot/Hart next year could be a homerun.

Stolarz once looked like a great prospect, but losing a year to a knee injury was obviously a suckerpunch. The fact that they have to play him even if he craps the bed in order to keep his RFA status is hilarious and shows how low Talbots trade value really was.

Except that usually goalies come here and get worse.

The oilers are professional tankers.

They were a bubble playoff team when Klefbom went down and used that opportunity to handcuff themselves with bad defensemen which then handcuffed their cap and forced them to trade their goalie for a player who has been bad this year and has to play or be a UFA.

No one can accuse them of intentionally tanking now. That is next level skill.

If you can draft McDavid and still manage to finish last I think we should hire that management team and just do the opposite. It takes real skill to be this bad.

They now have Red paper clipped Talbot and Eberle.

Well it looks like someone else will now likely benefit from acquiring an oiler player and carefully washing the stink off. Was hoping the Flames would end up with Talbot but he and the Flyers seem like a good match.

Stolarz was the Flyers goalie of the future a couple years ago in the same way Gillies looked to be the Flames. Now he's royally screwed, especially if they play him enough to keep him restricted. Poor kid.

Y'know I'm not adverse to bringing Elliott back. Acquisition cost could be extremely low and his stats don't look that bad in Philly. At least better than Mike Smith's stats

Just say no to Brian Elliott. He and Brouwer are the only two players in all of hockey that I never want to see as Flames ever again in my life.
