Doesn't matter, the ref shouldn't have too.

So I can say that it was an Adult referee. This event was private and not sanctioned by Hockey Alberta or Hockey Canada. This is the reason why most officials will not ref it. We are not covered by our Hockey Alberta Insurance to do this and it's all at our own risk. There is no recourse for us as officials when a player does anything as no suspension is upheld by Hockey Canada.
I have heard people question why the referee did not skate away or skate off the ice, however with where the referee room is in that arena, it would be right near the bench and the door was probably locked, so his escape was most likely blocked.
There are always two sides to every story, but as all have said this needs to be brought to light on a larger scope that this is never an acceptable response.

I'm not saying he deserved it all or it's his fault in any way, because it's not. Hockey refs get needlessly #### on all the time and it's a huge black eye for minor hockey. It's just humorous to see these idiots slowly slipping and sliding their way to him as he gently glides backwards, makes you forget that he's on skates.

Not a bad idea. IMO it all starts with the parents. If parents are acting like idiots in the stands for 10 year old hockey, the situation will continue to perpetuate.
I have seen more parents tossed at games and tournaments in last two years and I am good with that. If the ref can hear you, you're gone.
But I like the idea of someone responsible in the stands.
But of course there's no way no police those parents who insist their life needs to revolve around their child's success at hockey.

There are more details in this story.
https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/assault-c...ment-1.4584117
The above states the kid slashed the ref a couple of times before the ref shoved the kid away. At that point, the coaches and relatives started going after the ref. I'm not sure who the 36-year-old who also got charged was. Maybe he was one of the other guys who went after the ref. Either way, the grampa there is the real villain. He ran up and shoved the other coach hard on the ice which could easily have caused a head injury before going after the ref. Gramps should never set foot in an arena ever again.

Calgary minor soccer has a "Field Marshall" which is a parent from each team. If the ref asks the marshall to keep is fans in line and if they don't the game can be forfeited and the offending team fined.
I thought a similar program in hockey could work.

it would be nice to hear more details of what lead up to this, but regardless, it was wrong and a horrible example for the players.
parents in the stands openly jeering- my suggestion is, come out of the stands and get on the ice and show us how it is done. you can make a pretty good living reffing at the NHL level.

I grew up in the Lethbridge area, and I can say that after reading that article I am not the least bit surprised with the details it contained.
I used to ref hockey in my teens and early twenties, and I officiated my share of games in Kainai/Standoff as well.

Why shove the kid back? If the kid is doing a Dennis Wideman, the ref should just go Don Henderson - drop on the ground and pretend to be dead, and sue for like $10million in damages...

I coached my son’s soccer team for two years. The crazy soccer parents tended to be from other countries where they take soccer more seriously, much like some hockey parents in Canada.

It was a 55 year old guy, whose grandson slashed the ref, that is now up on assault charges.
His story doesn’t quite pass the smell test.
But in the era of doubling down on douchy behaviour, not surprising

After reading this, I'm not surprised the kid slash the ref, the grandpa probably taught him that's the right way to deal with anger.

From article posted above, quote from man arrested:
Quote:
According to Creighton, the incident occurred after the game and ahead of the team's exchanging handshakes. He says his grandson called the official a 'bad ref' and the ref responded by telling the boy to 'get off the f-ing ice' and pushing him. Creighton say his grandson's head struck the ice and the boy proceeded to slash the shinpads of the ref with his stick.
|
Even if the ref did initiate contact, attacking him still isn’t cool. Call the cops like a normal person.

It's kind of amazing when people post garbage like this that they don't realize the only person who actually looks bad is themselves.

Also, his version of events will obviously be completely edited to make himself completely sympathetic. I wouldn't necessarily trust the referee's word for the same reason. Hopefully enough witnesses saw what happened to allow the truth to be known.
