Default So Tell Me About Q-Haute

Aside from having the awesome "Q-" in their name, can anyone give me some background/reviews of this place?

I've heard good things, but I'm curious.

I was very underwhelmed - Would not recommend. It all felt super pretentious and forced, and the food was not great (very experimental, which was neat. But the resulting flavors were pretty hit and miss). And it was major $$ too. There are other restaurants I'd rather be spending $300+ at on a dinner for two.

A friend of a friend who used to work there. He pretty much quit because he couldnt handle how anal the Exec chef and expeditor were of their dishes. Which pretty much is a good thing if you`re a customer, so I went there.

Went there for lunch and enjoyed it.

Would recommend

Been for lunch - pretty good - lots of other places I'd rather go though.

Used to be La Caille. Do they still make everything out of quails?

It was La Caille and it changed to Q Haute later. I liked it as La Caille more than Q Huate. If you like fancy big plate small portion cusine, then Q Huate is for you. Otherwise, I prefer the more traditional steak house to these kind of restaurant if I have to pay for my meal.

Basically, it's different from anything else in the city, and if you want to spend your dollars on a memorable dining experience, in the truest sense of the word, then it's well worth it. I've been a couple of times and it's always impressed.

If you've ever gone for brunch at Vero Bistro (also recommended incidentally), I would say that Q Haute is to the rest of Calgary's good restaurants what Vero's eggs benedict are to those you'd get in a really good diner. I guess what I'm saying is that's it's pointless to compare Q Haute to a good steakhouse because they're not providing the same experience at all. Apples to oranges.

My husband and I did the 7 course tasting menu at Q Haute in the fall and it was amazing. Paired it with wine and the sommellier was great - particularly after he found out we were very knowlegeable about wines and liked trying new stuff. While I don't always love the "creative plating" that restuarants do with tasting menus, I totally didn't mind it here because all of the dishes were so tasty. (Only one I didn't like was a squid ink pickeral ravioli in a fish broth, but I'm not a fish person). I did find the tasting menu that night a bit low on protien and high on the desserts/sweets component, but that comes down to personal preference. We'd definitely go back again.
