[Predictions] Your 2020 Off-Season Predictions Thread
Figured there are enough of us running through potential roster changes that it might be fun to speculate for a day or two leading up to the chaos of this week.
Let's do it with some rules:
Predict up to:
- Two UFA Forwards
- Two UFA Defencemen
- One UFA Goaltender (If needed)
- Two Trades
- Who the Flames draft in the 1st and 2nd round of the NHL Entry Draft
I'll start:
Trade 1:
To Carolina: Johnny Gaudreau
To Calgary: 2020 1st round pick (13th), 2020 2nd round pick (41st), 2020 2nd round pick (52nd), Ryan Suzuki
Trade 2:
To New Jersey: Noah Hanifin
To Calgary: 2020 1st round pick (18th), Ty Smith
UFA Forwards:
Taylor Hall (7 years, $8.25M AAV)
Patrick Maroon (3 years, $1.35M AAV)
UFA Defencemen:
TJ Brodie (5 years, $4.55M AAV)
Michael Stone (1 year, $700K AAV)
UFA Goalie:
Jacob Markstrom (5 years, $6M AAV)
1st Round Picks:
13th - Dylan Holloway
18th - Connor Zary
19th - Mavrik Bourque
2nd round picks:
41st - Ozzy Wiesblatt
49th - Jean-Luc Foudy
52nd - Dmitri Ovchinnikov

Trade 1
Buffalo gets :
Johnny Gaudreau
Oliver Kylington
Calgary gets:
8th, Cozens, Ristolainen
Trade 2
NJ gets:
Noah Hanifin
Calgary gets:
18th, Mirco Mueller, Mike McLeod
UFA:
Taylor Hall
Sami Vatanen
Braden Holtby
Draft:
8. Askarov
18. Amirov
19. Barron
2nd:
Topi Niemela
This prediction lays the groundwork for the next core to fit in with the current core. Best of both worlds of win now and win later.

That Buffalo trade is heavily tilted towards the Flames.

Over pay or no way, I thought that was the concensus around here to move Johnny button hook.

I really hope we don't sign Sami Vatanen. I just don't see an awful lot that I actually like about the player. It pretty much ends at "oh he's right handed"

The Flames make no trades. They sign Markstrom and TJ Brodie. They draft Lapierre at 19. I have no clue who they take in the 2nd rnd.

I like his game. He can skate the puck up the ice, he's good in transition and battles hard. And he doesn't mind blocking shots which the Flames need more of.

Might as well trade Sean also to give flames better chance at first overall pick. That team doesn’t make the playoffs.

Prediction? If any of these trades for draft picks takes place the Flames will be thankful COVID is still a thing. Otherwise they would have to explain why they were playing to an empty house.

If you think that the younger players are going to suck year after year, then allowing them more ice time is the wrong way to go. You are right to be negative.

Flames will acquire a goalie, but I it won't be Markstrom. I think they will resign TJ Brodie. Gaudreau will not be traded. No other big name free agents will sign with the Flames. I hope I'm wrong on all except resigning of Brodie.

I'm sure a lot of folks would torch you for this idea, but in reality within a season or two this squad would be more productive than what the Flames will be icing if they stay the course. It may be a bit painful next year, but from a management perspective I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep worrying about the gate in the 2020-21 season. If you want to retool over a 2-4 year period, this is the year to start that process.
For those who see Backlund as no more than a third line center, or anticipate that liberating Sean Monahan from the anchor that is Johnny Gaudreau will finally unleash the 1st line beast, these moves should be delicious.

Treliving wins a trade or two or three.
Treliving signs players to great contracts.
Flames look good.
Fans still call for Treliving to be fired.
Flames win Stanley Cup. Same fans ask if we can finally fire Treliving.

Too many people want to trade Johnny but think Monahan is 1 Center. This team is going no where with Monahan as 1C. He does absolutely nothing for himself. Dude out here flexing for pics but can't even lay a hit. He's made a living off cherry picking Johnny's feeds.

UFA: Forward- Taylor Hall
- Wayne Simmonds
Defence- TJ Brodie (re-signs before FA starts)
- Chris "Great Save" Tanev
Goalie- Jacob Markström
- Aaron Dell
Trades: I'm no good at predicting returns, but if my UFA predictions come true...
Gaudreau gets traded only if Hall signs, so nothing will happen on that front until after the draft.
If the Flames aquire Markstrom or another goalie capable of playing 50-60 games, Rittich gets traded and the Flame sign local kid, Dell as the backup (and Parsons takes the spot before the end of the season).
Draft: 1st Round: Connor Zary
2nd Round: Ryan O'Rourke

This is a mix of what I hope will happen with a combination of what I think could happen
To Flyers: Gaudreau
To Flames: Frost, 1st, Zemula, Gostisbhere
Flames trade Johnny home and add 3 pieces for the future and begin remaking their blueline. Frost, and Zumula fit the need of center and right shot D and they add another first round pick to the stable
To any team looking for a 3-4 C: Derek Ryan
To Flames: 3rd round pick
Flames dump cap and get a pick in a round they don’t have a selection
To Bruins: Hanifin, Mangipane
To Flames: Carlo, DeBrusk
This is the trade no one saw coming and a bit out of left field. Boston likes the hometown boy who comes with longer term security. Mangipane has a contentious negotiation with the Flames last summer that may have left a bad taste in the mouths of both sides. They move on just as the Bruins are rumored to be moving on from DeBrusk
Flames sign Markstrom 5.75x6 with a NMC. Flames get their guy and give him the security he desires and the team knows their goaltending plan for the next several years with this move
Flames sign Taylor Hall $8.5M x 7 years NMC/buyout proof bonus laden contract. Just like the Oilers with Lucic back in 2016 the Flames get one of the best free agents on the market but are forced to ante up an extremely risky contract that includes a NMC, and buyout proof bonus structure.
Hall-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-DeBrusk
Lucic-Bennett-Dube
TBD-Frost-TBD- Depth ufa signings or prospects fill the 4th line role
Giordano-Andersson
Valimaki-Carlo
Gostisbhere-Kylington
Markstrom
Rittich
Definitely a different looking team
