It's a bit crazy how the Dodgers who likely end up with 104 wins will need to win a game against the hottest team in Baseball to earn the right to play the Giants who likely end up with 105 or 106 wins. Likewise the team who won more games than anyone else is looking at playing the team with the second highest win total in the first round. Although that would be one hell of a series with that rivalry. Too bad it won't be the LCS though.

It's only the second time in the wild card era that this has happened.

It's crazy, but I still like that winning a division is so important. It makes the regular season much more meaningful. I might change something to allow the Giants an option to pick the worst div winner, but still have to beat everyone to win it all.
I can't believer the Padres are now 26 games out and way out of the wildcard. They were right in the mix at the trade deadline and looked to be the ones getting Max.

I couldn't agree more, almost to the point I want to kiss you.
The talk about expanding the playoffs to include more wild card teams degrades the regular season.
Making the playoffs in baseball used to mean you were elite. It used to be 4 teams total. The pennants used to mean something. Winning the league pennant gave you home field for the LCS.
Now it's 10 teams in. With interleague play, you invariably end up with a "less than great" team as the #3 seed.
For the second time in three years, the two best teams in the league are going to meet in the first round. NYY/BOS in 2018 and SF/LAD this year.
If it goes to 12 or 16, it means if a team makes the playoffs that you are good. At that point, the league should give out participation pennants.

If you expand the playoffs you'd have to give the higher seed more home games, or byes, or 1-0 leads, like in Japan.

The winner of the NL wild card game will play the winner of the Astros/White Sox matchup for the World Series.

No, this decade is going to start out with the Giants winning the first 3 world series every odd year. So instead of 2010, 2012, 2014...they'll go 2021, 2023 & 2025.
I don't know if anyone predicted them to make the playoffs let alone win 107 games. At the start of the year the hype was on the Padres and the Dodgers...well out of nowhere the Giants managed to beat both of them.

I didn't hate it but glad it's gone for post season. It maybe should have started if the game was still tied in the 11th or 12th..
I love baseball and wouldn't change much. But they have to do something about the length of games. There are far too many pitches in every at bat and we need to see more balls in play earlier in at bats.

Pitch clock is the obvious answer and I hope they turn to it soon. Shorter games, more balls in a play, and more scoring. What's not to like?

Electronic strike zone will probably mean more swinging and more balls in play.
I was skeptical at first, but after seeing how well it worked at the US Open, it's time.

For regular season I liked the runner on second. With 162 games, and many of these games already dragging on for over 3 hours they do need to find ways to avoid these 16 inning regular season marathons. Pitch clocks and automated home plate umps, might move things along a bit better, but the modern game is to try and make pitchers throw 9 pitches per at bat until the guy makes a mistake that you can knock out of the park or you manage to lay off 4 pitches out of the zone.
It would be interesting to compare the number of pitches thrown in a game today vs a game from 35 years ago. The days of these Greg Maddux 90 pitch complete games seem so far gone.

Yeah agreed. And there is a school of thought that says a tighter strike zone results in more contact and I'd like to see if it would play out that way.

See ya later Country Joe. Oh how I won't miss you trying to be the centre of attention anymore.
Next up. Angel Hernandez please(and maybe his doppelganger Phil Cuzzi). Although Angel's slowly turning his narrative into being so bad he's good. Kind of like a campy horror movie. And I got to give him credit for falling over a railing yesterday to make a call.
Maybe after some of these lifers retire the MLB will take a serious look at the automated strike zone.

Except for people like Stanton.
That homer he hit still stings.

As much as I'm still butthurt about the Jays not making it, there is still something about NYY vs BOS playing each other in the playoffs.
This gonna be good.

I don't like the Sox and their fans, so I'd prefer the Yanks take this one as Stanton and Judge are good guys.
