I mean is it going to be some sort of player transfer agreement + friendly match arrangement? Hopefully the CFL keeps 3-Downs when the details shake loose.
Edit: And if something official happens I'll be very disappointed if Johnson doesn't lean into doing a "Finally! The Rock has come back to..." cheap pop.
I don't know, maybe you can do a north and south division that don't interplay, both have their own trophies. The Grey Cup in the North, and the Rock Cup for the South, however teams can trade back and forth. Maybe each team has an out of division neutral site game, some three down and some four down. Have a neutral site king of king game between the Winner of the North and the south, and the higher ranked team can decide on three or four down ball as a reward for rocking it.
I don't know. But I think this could be more about capital investment in the CFL then anything else.

Hard to really gauge what the partnership would involve given what little information is out there. I do feel the CFL should be entertaining all options at this time and while CFL expansion in the US failed the first time that doesn't mean it can't work if done right. As said above maybe some sort of player transfer agreement although I'm not exactly sure how that would work as I would hate to see Bo suffer a long term injury while playing in he XFL that would derail the Stamps season.
I’ve been a CFL fan for over 50 years and grew up with the league. I would listen to games on an old Telefunken hifi radio that my dad had and I now own. In my late-teens a friend and I bought our first season tickets and I’ve had season tickets for nearly 40 seasons.
If they change to American rules, I’m out.
Edit: This morning I’ve reached out to two friends who are huge fans like me. My friends will also abandon the league. If they think a merge (I don’t know if that’s the plan) will save the league, they’re idiots. A merger (if that’s the goal) will kill the league.

I would have to think anything on that front would exclude the folk who are good enough to make the real money. I mean I imagine the guys who have to get 2nd jobs in the offseason would probably jump at the opportunity to just play more football.
I just don't want a merger. A merger would mean 4-Down football and YMMV but I like the CFL rules more.
Not a merger, but what if the CFL champ played the XFL champ every year? They could alternate between the 3-down and 4-down?
I'd be good with that. I might be fuzzy, but the AFL and NFL played by different rules and they figured it out.
You could still run a CFL season and the winners of the CFL and XFL could have a brawl for it all. Alternate the game between Canadian and US neutral site games with the appropriate rules. Give them a couple of weeks to prepare though and get used to the rule changes etc.

The XFL has cash, but not much stability. The CFL has stability, but not much cash. Match made in heaven really. No idea what the plan is, but the marriage makes sense.

If they could make North American League where there's a CFL conference and XFL conference that may work where the CFL schedule is largely CFL teams playing each other with maybe a game here or there against a US team much like the NFL handles out of conference play. The major hurdle will be the rules and amount of downs. I just don't see how you can have a league with both 3 and 4 down rules.

It's juuuust a bit different having a DH and having an entire other down. But frankly with how football is trending with more passing then ever I think it's logical to go with two downs. I think the market is a lot different then 1995 for CFL rules in America, faster games and even more passing sounds like a winner now.

Exp:
If the XFL adopts the CFL's rules....then it could work.
What wont work in any way, shape or form is the CFL adopting their rules.
Different fields, different rules, hell even 12 players vs 11 on any given play, different clock rules, different time outs, the rouge, no yards vs fair catch.
Biggest issue would be non-import quotas on Canadian teams which is an immediate disadvantage.
If they want to make the CFL a farm system for the NFL via merge with the XFL...then so be it. I, personally, will not be along for the ride.
The CFL is the CFL because it is ours and played the way we developed it. Anything else is not the CFL any longer.
I certainly don't object to these preliminary discussions between the CFL and XFL, but it's tough to really have an opinion until we have more details. What I would like to hear/see from the commissioner's office are some detailed plans, timelines etc. on when he thinks the 2021 season will start and how many fans will be in the stands when the season does start.
CFL:
Summer/Fall
110 yard field
Goal post on goal line
3 downs
No Yards
Single Point (rouge)
12 players
Canadian Player requirements
XFL:
Spring
100 yard field
Goal post on end line
4 downs
Fair Catch
No single point
11 players
two point converts mandatory?
No national player requirements
