Why do they do those? Just retire the number like a normal club.

Any interview Kiprusoff is a big deal. He doesn’t like the limelight and is about as humble as one can be about the success he’s achieved and the resulting pay to go along with that success.
As far as honouring him, about time. As good as he was, still was taken for granted by the fans for many years post 2004. Flames really never have fully recovered from his loss as far as a goalie that could carry the load for more than one solid season.
Though he should be one of the few to have a jersey retired along with Jarome.

I'd actually prefer that. Nonetheless, it does appear the Kipper nostalgia is being turned up.

I hope Kipper is the next Flames goalie coach.

Exactly. The guy is notoriously reticent with the limelight. Didn't even pick up his Vezina Trophy at the NHL Awards Ceremony. Why all of the sudden?

Certainly something afoot. Which is good.
Don’t forget his side door exit at garbage days, and snubbing Finland that one year because they didn’t pick him to be one of the three goalies years ago. And the the Leafs trying to coax him into playing longer. He just wanted to fish as opposed to making another few million.
There are lots of Kiprusoff stories floating around and of course the pic of the backroom in Cowboys with him and Phaneuf smoking, the stories I heard is that he could never believe he makes as much money for what he did.

But Kipper and Iginla should have the same honour as other players like Vernon. And Iginla’s the best player ever to play on the Flames.

Kippers number should be retired. Either way, glad to have some kipper news.
Is he still in Calgary? I think he was shortly after his career and wouldn't be shocked if he still was. Him and his family seemed to love Calgary.

This is true. He geniunely didn't understand the idolization of hockey/sports players. He wasn't judgemental about it or anything... I got the sense it seriously perplexed him.
However, he was also entirely thankful he was able to make the living he did by doing so. He wasn't blind to that.
This isn't surprising, but I got the vibe that the guy's passion in life wasn't hockey and that he saw it as an enjoyable job. He took pride in it and worked hard at it (mostly) like a good employee in any profession.

Kiprusoff is by far my most favourite Flame of all times. I doubt anyone else will be, ever. Those of us that are old enough still remember the gloomy seven years of mediocrity and no playoffs from 1996 to 2003 until Miikka single-handedly brought the team back to confidence and success. For that alone, #34 should hang off the rafters.
I've had a pleasure of meeting and talking to him quite a bit and to say he's shy is a gross understatement. The man not just disliked, but hated the hype and attention from the press, fans and even from his own teammates, which is why I am very excited about this interview.
There is one thing still bothering me: why did he not agree to play one more season, when everyone was literally begging him to stay and why did he leave the way he left. I hope he'll talk about it.

Of course. They said he had never intended to play his last year. But do you remember how this was announced?

I always loved the way he acted after a goal was scored on him. Just turned around and took a sip of his water. He was always cool as a cucumber, even if it was a bad goal. His teammates always knew he won't panic and he would be able to make the next big save. Complete opposite of Elliott or Hiller for example.

They will continue to come up with garbage ways to honor a player, so long Ken King is still part of the franchise.

I wonder if Mikka has a shot at the Hall of Fame.
Is he not the second most successful European goalie of all time? Won a vezina. a work horse. One of the top in his position in the league for better part of a decade.
Maybe 3rd...
Tretiak
Hasek
Kipper?
King Henrik?
