How has this not yet happened? I would think it was written into his new billlion-dollar contract, no?

They havent met his 'Key to the City' clause yet.
I understand that the plans for the festival are just a month of Connor dancing lethargically in the Town Square occasionally accompanied by Oiler greats of the 80s.
Wayne and Messier are apparently contractually obligated to dance alongside him. You really have to read the fine print on those contracts.

I was more talking about trying to avoid the gongshow that is a massive tourist trap like the (former) largest mall in the world. Ever try to park there on a weekend? It'll take years off your life. Wasn't saying I don't go to avoid the scuzzies, just saying there's lots of those types in & around the mall area, especially in the evenings. Go through the Bourbon Street entrance for further confirmation. That mall is not in a great area.
You're right, I'm sure lots of people who live in the area go there, I guess I'm more saying it's not the exciting place to go for Edmontonians like it seems to be for out of towners. I lived in the NW part of the city (well, St. Albert, close enough) which is where the mall is, outside of my gf and the shopaholic females in her family, I don't know anyone who went there as their go-to shopping spot. As you mentioned, it's pretty normal for locals to avoid the tourist traps in their own city. I don't think that's hipster, it's just the way it is.
And as always, E=NG

For people in Edmonton. Outside of Edmonton, no one cares. People all over the world have heard of the Stampede, or Just for Laughs, or the Montreal Jazz Festival, or Coachella.
Edmonton will forever suffer from "Small City Syndrome".

Edmonton is a dump and the Oilers are their tire fire.
Edmontonians are okay however. They are just normal hard working Albertans who I feel a little sorry for. It's not their fault they had to grow up in a city which nurtures a huge inferiority complex towards Calgary and indoctrinates a love of team lottery.

I spent 2 years in Edmonton going to NAIT and can attest to the residents being okay. However thier dislike for Calgary is on the same level as our dislike for Edmonton.

I lived in Calgary for a few years and I liked it less with each year (probably due to the amount of my life I wasted in traffic). I would pick Edmonton over Calgary as a place to live, although I'm sure it would wear on me too. Also, I live in Brooks where the stink of cows isn't as bad as the stink of the Oilers I guess I just like small towns.

I can't believe so many of you have this much time on your hands. The whole Calgary v. Edmonton city rivalry is so weird to me. I don't see why people from various cities feel so threatened by other cities that they have to expend so much energy hating on the other city. I'm not only talking about hating on Edmonton, but also the other way around. Whatever floats your boat I guess.
I understand hating the other city's hockey team, but the hating the city itself has never made any sense to me.

Personally, I don't have to expend any energy hating on Edmonton. The hate just flows through naturally, you know?

It's a sports rivalry thing where fans love to pick on the other teams city. When I lived in Edmonton the Gretzky Oilers and the Eskimos were the tops in their league and I would often be the brunt of insults from those fans because they knew I was a Calgarian at heart.
