It was a dude who built like 5 of these house/cabin type things on one (large) property on a cliff overlooking the atlantic. The property was big and he also made it so each cabin was kind of secluded. So you knew you were in the presence of other vacationers, but still had your little cabin and surrounding treed in area for privacy.

I also vote you try the Keith's brewery tour, as well as visit the Split Crow. Both are very close to one another. Also, fish n chip is a must while in Halifax.

Slightly off topic, but Ingonosh is awesome. There are a number of cabins you can rent. I've stayed at both the Ingonish Chalets or Sleepy Hollow.
The beforementioned windy road is the Cabot Trail. Depending on the publication it's the number one drive in North America.
Golf is amazing here too. Again depending on the publication Highlands Links is the top course in the country; depending on the publication Cabot Links is the top course in the country. That said Bell Bay holds its own. That also doesn't speak of The Lakes, Portage, or Dundee.
Hiking is fantastic here as well.
I could go on forever about this place. If anyone is ever coming to Cape Breton and want ideas or a tour let me know I'm more than happy to oblige.
And don't forget about the Fortress of Louisbourg, it makes the Halifax Citadel look like child's play. The reconstruct is 1/3rd done and its the largest historical reconstruct in North America. It'll take your full day and bring a sweater.
There is now full year service from Sydney to Toronto in addition to the 3x daily seasonal service, and 6 flights from Halifax. With WestJet Encore coming east in a few years you should see prices fall.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I had a blast and will make a point of going back to do more. I have nothing bad to say about anything. The only weird thing that happened was I saw some guy go Nicolas Cage on a VLT in a bar...lol.
Just a great city.

Can you rent houses on the ocean in these areas?

You guys should just become a pilot. According to my math, the cost of licences and crap pay for themselves in flight benefits alone in roughly 74.3 years give or take.
I have just under a week off near the end of August and I have been looking for something to do for a kind of last hurrah of the summer. Due to this thread, I think I am going to head to Halifax and Cape Breton Island.

Great thread. Always wanted to visit the maritimes -- may try to do so next year (likely NS and perhaps PEI).
P.S. 50 posts and no mention of donairs? Are they any different/better than the stuff you get here?

No idea what they're like out west. Here they are nectar of the Gods.
In Halifax: King of Donairs and Sicilian are great. On Cape Breton go to Island Greek.

That's the absolute best thing (besides the seafood) about the Maritimes - the complete lack of pretense that the locals have. It's what makes you never want to leave.

Patio was closed unfortunately.
Have since hit up the Ole triangle ale house and the Foggy Goggle. Maybe check out the Lower Deck later on.
Heading to Cape Breton tomorrow, drive the Cabot trail Monday!

We're driving the trail tomorrow, I think. If you need any suggestions for the Cape let me know.

We're going to be in NS in early October for 4 days . Basically going to be renting a car and road tripping the whole time. Not much time, but it's better than nothing.
Our idea is to drive the Cabot Trail two days, then a couple days around Halifax and area. I'm pretty excited to do the Cabot Trail even though it'll be a bit rushed.
Can any of you locals recommend a good hotel/motel at the top half of the Trail? Any seafood/lobster recommendations appreciated as well!

When I went to Nova Scotia and it was a long time ago. I went to the miners museum including a tour through the shaft that went under the ocean.
I also went to fortress Louisborg which was pretty cool at the time.
I did do the Chabot trail, but it maybe wasn't my thing.

To piggy back on this, I have a 8 hour layover in Halifax in mid Oct. Plan is to get to downtown and check out the boardwalk and citadel. Would also like a good recommendation for a restaurant. I know Salty's was recommended a few years ago, does it still hold up?
In a perfect world my plan is to land, get to down town, grab a donair, go to citadel and maybe something else depending on time, grab dinner, cab it back to airport. Pretty ambitious, but is there anything else that is must see given the short time frame?
