Not much to go on now, sprawl will be a good bet

davealberta.ca will probably have something as well as we get closer.
But it’s early days.

Farkas was calling the public sector blood sucking vampires that needed a stake in them. Not sure how many public servants will be voting for him. Also received no repercussions for such comments. Rick bell article

The City of Calgary itself is one of the city's largest employers - anyone that works for the City would be complete idiots to vote for Farkas if they value their jobs. Hopefully they all realize and vote elsewhere.

I will be so upset if Farkas somehow manages to pull out a win.

Personally I think he will do better than some of you expect so I would not recommend pity votes. Bill Smith ended up being close behind Nenshi and he had absolutely nothing going on other than "I'm not Nenshi". Farkas is much better at the game of politics than Smith and will get a lot of the votes from people that don't like Nenshi and there's a lot of those people.

Yeah, simply by Farkas being a councilor (even for one term), and playing up the contrarian role to appear populist, is going to get him a lot of votes from those who believe city hall is a dysfunctional mess and love the "cut jobs, lower taxes" line. There's a lot of ignorant citizens out there that his messaging is going to be effective.
It should be a close race just like the one in Nenshi's first election when his main opponents were McIver and Barb Higgins; since it's not involving an incumbent. (Assuming Nenshi is not going to run again now) However, if there a fair number of candidates that share similarities to Farkas in philiopshy, that should end up splitting the vote on that side of the spectrum, and work in favour to Gondek if she doesn't have much competition on her end.

A mayor has very limited ability to do anything that would cause job loss. Especially with a strong council.

While that’s absolutely true for items that require council approval, there’s a huge number of procedural and administrative measures that don’t require council approval that can be hugely swayed by the mayor. And that applies outside the City too, as the mayor often acts as our representative to other levels of government.

Jeff Davidson is running again for Councillor in Ward 6. Evan Woolley is not going to run again in Ward 8.

Crazy that Woolley isn’t running again. I can’t see him running for mayor. Maybe running in Prov/federal.
Also surprised Davidson is not running for mayor as many people predict he’s gearing up for that at some point. Wouldnt know be the time knowing the incumbent is likely out? I can’t see Davidson worried about splitting an enormous amount of support from either farkas or gondek
EDIT: Woolley told CBC he’s looking at private sector

Really surprised Evan isn’t running again, or making a run at mayor. I always thought that was his end goal. Life threw him a few curveballs though which seems to have changed his perspective on what’s important.

I'm really hoping Wooley doesn't end up at an urban developer.... I can think of a few socially oriented organizations that could use his skills in a more meaningful way.
