Trading Monahan early enough in the potentially forming Mike Richards career trajectory would be shrewd. Do it this year.

I would definitely trade Monahan and Bennett for PLD and they wouldn’t need to add anything (unless Pu is just a contract throw in).
Flames could keep Lindholm at C in this scenario and let Johnny be the Panarin for Dubois.

Where did Backs go?
Him on the 3rd line instead of Leivo no?

I was talking it over with a friend and he brought up a crazy idea; what if CBJ just wanted futures for PLD. Would you do Backlund (for salary purposes, if you could convince him to waive NTC. If not Ryan) Zarry, 2 unprotected first round picks and 2 seconds?

So, Backlund, Zary, 2 firsts and 2 seconds for PLD?
No, I wouldn't do that.

Columbus wouldn’t do that.
They would get murdered in the media for that...
This years draft is not very good, our 1st is closer to a 2nd in an average draft.

I imagine it's not so much that the draft isn't good but rather that the draft is unpredictable because the sample size will be small on a lot of these kids. Could be a good year to get steals IMO

Monahan is not a 1C on many teams

Currently only the Sens, Kings, Wings and Devils could take on his entire cap hit. Add Nashville with $3.6mm and then nobody else has over 2.
That means that any trade outside of those teams would have to include at least $3mm in salary going back. (plus replacement players if you do it through multiple contracts). On the Flames that means someone significant (or Lucic). Columbus only has $1.6mm, so doesn't have much in the way of room to add on their end either so even a Monahan trade would be tough to digest without salary retention (which hurts us in the third year when PLD has a new contract).
Given that, Columbus will have to wait until closer to the deadline or will otherwise need to match salary fairly closely if they feel pressured to get it done ASAP. Torts comments are probably making it even harder though. I bet the org wants him to shut up haha.

I don't think the acquisition cost would be this high.
For comparison, the offer sheet compensation for an $8.7-10.9 million AAV is 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd...and PLD is not a player that would command this type of salary.

A friend? Can't be that much of a friend. Friends don't let drunk friends drive... or suggest crazy trades.

Elias Lindholm has without doubt been the best player on the Flames so far this season. He can do it all. Center, right wing, play on the PP, play on the PK. He has a wicked shot (see today's goal).
If he's going to keep playing like this, I question whether the Flames even need someone like Dubois.
Monahan deserves some credit as well. He has played pretty well these last few games.

To add to the Lindholm love above, you have to factor-in that contract. What is his expected performance given that contract? 50pts?
Great contract. His performance vastly exceeds his cap hit, and at both ends of the ice. That is so important in a cap world.

He looks like a true number one. Lindholm is off the board for me.

I think years that are heavy on defenceman and light on forwards are usually looked as being weaker.
Having said that Wallstadt might be the only draft eligible player that is already elite for his age group.
Others might catch up but right now it’s not the strongest looking draft.

With Elias to C seemingly working, and Mangiapane & Dube potentially taking steps, Dubois isn't a player you desperately need.
Would I trade Monahan straight across for him? Yes, because it extends our window and gives Gaudreau a different kind of talent to work with, but I wouldn't murder the roster just to pick the kid up.

He’d be the salary going out in a picks prospects deal. But only if he’d waive.

With the complexities of rosters and taxi squads this year, contracts in and out of line ups I think would need to match so you are not short staffed.
PLD + Grigorenko
for
Monahan + Bennett (1.225 retained) + pick
This keeps CBJ under the cap
