Sounds about right. My guess is Gio around 15 and Johnny around 25?

I think they'll have Giordano in the 30-40 range. Too low, but he's "old." At the same token, Burns will be much higher despite being, what, only one year behind Gio?

You just know they will overrate Drai without acknowledging the McDavid factor.

That's a given, but at least they seem to have FINALLY moved on from him being a center which he played for about 5 minutes in his career.

Gio ten spots ahead of Johnny? Sarcasm?

Norris factor. It will play a part.

Watch them put Toews on here... these lists are always garbage, just ignore them.

Wasn’t Monahan rated higher than Couture in the NHL.com top 20 centres?

That seems to be the sentiment. I notice the Forecaster NHL yearbook they have Gio slotted in for regression because of his age but less drop off for the one year younger Burns.

Norris trophy, plus 200 foot play, plus position, plus intangibles like wearing the C. I'd say Gio may still be more valuable to the Flames.

Nope, Monahan was 19, Couture 17.

It is amusing to me that Monahan just barely makes the cut on these lists. It almost appears that observers recognize how good he is, but are flummoxed by his understated game and thus don’t seem to know where to rank him.

I was thinking it's hard to find a comparable, even historically, but then I remember Newy. Or maybe Esposito.

Esposito is actually a great comparison. Their playing styles are different, but both were about good positioning, and never ran around chasing other players or the puck. Esposito was constantly criticized for scoring garbage goals, and that all he did was stand in front of the net and tap in the setups that Orr gave him.
No speed, no talent, just leached off his teammates - 717 times.

I’m a huge Monahan fan but top 50 in the world is pretty fair to the guy. In no way is he being snubbed here. Only 6 spots behind Jack Eichel
“Just barely making the cut on these lists” is a huge honor

"He's a guy that's only going to get better," NHL Network analyst Brian Lawton said. "I think in future years we'll hear talk about this guy being a potential Selke candidate (award for best defensive forward in NHL) because he's got that kind of game to him. He's strong, he's mobile, he's tough in the circle, this guy can do it all in my opinion. His star is only going to rise over time."
This may get sneered at but I also think Monahan can be a good defensive player.

Monahan isn't bad defensively. He's not amazing, but he's far from a liability. He's also a young, offensively gifted player - those guys all have the same rap in their early-mid 20s. Defense takes time to learn - when Monahan is 28, nobody will be saying he's bad in his own zone.
He could stand to wear some of those Crosby sized gloves and protect his hands and wrists better.

I agree, I actually think Mony has the potential to be a real good 2 way forward. He can still build on his defensive game and improve in that area. I love Johnny, but I'm sure him constantly hovering near the blueline looking for the breakout pass doesn't help that top line's defensive coverage overall.
