We had a couple people drop out of the CP Ride on Saturday but with the smoke supposedly getting worse over the next couple days, it might be best to postpone anyway.

September 8th or 15th seems to work for people too. Anyone interested?

Here's the route I put together. A good mix of path and road. Nothing too difficult from an elevation perspective. Quieter roads and paths (aside from a short stretch of the #1 with big shoulders).

105km and 205m climbing.

It also gives people who don't want to do the full 100km an option. 62km from Cold Garden, around Chestermere Lake and back. Then we'll have some beers.

I like the route; I could probably do that one. My concern would be my speed; or lack thereof. I'm probably only good for 20-22 km/h.

Hopefully we can get enough folks out so there will be a couple other people in that speed range.

We can draft off you!

If people can't make the ride they should definitely come out for a couple pints at Cold Garden after.

I'm also considering detouring- and going straight south on 791 to Glenmore. Takes 30 km and the biggest hill climb out of the equation. Maybe once we get to Chestermere the faster people could go ahead, and I take the slower pack along with me. Meet up with everybody at Glenmore.

It would be worth throwing it on the buy/sell section here, too

this morning was a very cool 5 degrees outside when i left my house at 6.15.

i opted to go with some legging underneath my shorts and i did not even start to sweat until i had about 5 minutes left in my 45 minute commute in.

i also tend to leave a few minutes later and it is stunning how much of a difference 10 minutes makes as i work my way thru mackenzie towne. so much more traffic at 6.20 versus 6.

also first ride of the fall with my headlight running for the fist 15 minutes of the ride.

i miss mid july where it is a warm 5 and sunny at 6 am.

Hoping somebody can point me in the right direction. I am sure I have seen backpacks that are designed so that your back doesn't sweat when wearing it. I must be googling the wrong terms, because I'm not seeing them.

That's my challenge this time of year- what I need to wear to start the ride isn't what I need at the end.

Deuter Air or Futura. I've had a few and love them. Mec sells them.

i have had a few different packs that were designed to sit away from your back and you still always wind up with back sweat. if that is your main concern, then panniers are really the only way to go - that assumes your bike can handle a rack.

Otherwise, get layered up. i find i can usually deal with the morning temps with fleece lined tights or long underwear and a short sleeve shirt, medium weight long sleeve and a cycling jacket up top. towrds the end of my riding season, i add fall gloves, toe warmers and an earband and a set of clear glasses.

it makes it a pain to lug that stuff home though and it seems like it is more to wash each night.

Yeah, debating between a different backpack or panniers. My bike is a hybrid so it should be able to take a rack.

I ride with a backpack in the summer because I have a road bike and I don't want to mount a rack on it. In the winter it's rack all the way. If i had a dedicated commuting bike I would mount a rack and panniers, way easier to get that weight and sweat off your back and onto the bike.

Hoping for some advice.

I'm looking at getting into cycling for racing purposes as I want to give it a go for a Tri. The bike (and accessories) price is insane to me and I no real reference point. Anyone have any advice on a more economical way to get into road biking? I'm going to avoid the tri bike for now.

A friend of mine suggested getting fit for a frame at a shop then scouting Kijiji. Which I'm in the process of stating.

Any other nuggets?

Look on Pinkbike. You also don't NEED a $3000 carbon fibre bike. My road bike is from the mid-90's that I paid $300 for, and I've road it in 5 Ride to Conquer Cancer events, and it's fine. My wife paid $1000 for hers new.

And you also don’t “need” a tri bike for triathlon. I did my 70.3 last month on a road bike with aero bars, and passed a number of tri bikes. Bike fit is very important though.
