China Eastern 737-800 crashed this morning (yesterday? time zones...) with 133 on board. Videos and images show a nose dive and nothing left at the crash site.

Wouldn't this be a 737-800? The 737-8 is the name for the Max series aircraft which are still not cleared to fly in China IIRC. Doesn't change the fact this is a tragedy but it should be pointed out this is not a Max 8 aircraft.

I was just about to comment that this is not going to be good for the Max 8 saga but I looked at the reports and it is a 737-800. Still very unfortunate though.

It’s a 737-300 is it not?

It was a -800, China Eastern doesn't have -300's.

Must have been a too little coffee situation this morning. Thanks for the clarification.

Saw the flight profile. Suicide?

Kinda what it looks like doesn't it?

I wonder if they'll even be able to recover the black boxes? I know they're built to withstand high forces, but 900 kph straight into the ground?

Yeah, I just saw the video that a local took moments before the crash. The nose was pointed straight down. This isn't like the Max 8 crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia caused by the MCAS system: this was an aircraft that was already an hour into its flight, and plummetted from ~30,000 ft in a matter of ~4 minutes. Crazy.

Thanks for sharing. This is incredibly tragic and sad. Saw a report on this on CBC National tonight and hearing from some of the people waiting at the airport for their family members to arrive, including a mother waiting for her 29-year old son was hard to listen to.

Looks similar to the Germanwings flight 9525 that smashed into the Alps by suicide pilot.

I'm assuming they're looking at using it for more trans-atlantic routes.

Yup:

"pending Transport Canada approval for overseas operations, also fly transatlantic missions"

That would explain the lie flat seats.

While I love being in a lie flat form Toronto to Halifax, it's not really needed.

Interesting - that'd have to be for TATL routes out of YYZ/YUL only? The 321XLR is still about 3000km short of the range on an A330. Hopefully that means we keep the A330 on routes from Calgary - I'll take the wide body and 2-4-2 peasant class anyday....

I'd think YYC TATL will stay widebody, but with AC that is all on the 787's now, and I think the odd 777 sometimes. A330's have been on some YYZ and YUL runs.
