Gift-worthy Chess Sets?
After watching "The Queens Gambit" on Netflix, my family has started playing chess every day (after years of playing very sporadically), and we're really enjoying it.
I would like to buy a chess set as a gift, ideally spending $100 - $200.
It's hard to gauge quality online, but does anyone have a suggestion for a particular set that would make a nice gift?

Not necessarily chess, but we've bought a few board game sets from Michaud Games. Canadian-made and very reasonably priced (almost suspiciously so!).
https://www.michaudtoys.org
I think they make great gifts, and it's always good to support a Canadian-made product.

I am confident you can buy a set at a local farmers market - hand-crafted too. Check out some of the Winter/Christmas markets upcoming (although COVID dependent I guess). We bought a hand-crafted chess set from Royal Bison up here in Edmonton for about $110 and it was a beautiful board/pieces with great finishings.
Chess sets are something I'm confident one can find locally (and support!)

Get yourself a rock hammer and blanket and have the boys collect soapstone and alabaster from outside the walls. Red can get you a deal on a board, for the usual 2 packs of smokes.

I got one for my dad at 10,000 Villages (like 7 years ago). He specifically asked for a "nice chess set" so I went there and got one that was all handmade stone pieces on a mosaic board. It was classy and one of the most successful gifts I've managed for either of my folks.
Edit: I would also say they had tons of ones that weren't as nice (still the whole Namibia-based artisan-made deal), and the lady said I was lucky to grab one of the top-end ones, as they tend to sell well.
Also, the disappointment of my life was that I never beat him at chess...time to go have a cry

We should have a thread for pics of our cool chess sets. Mine is onyx from Mexico that I had made into a table. Lugging it home was hard but rewarding.

Someone writing about their father after he has passed away doesn't strike me as an opportunity for a burn.

I have a hand carved chess set from India that my grandma smuggled back to Canada after going there in the 70s. It has dudes riding elephants for the knights and cool indian themed stuff like that. And all of the tusks and such are made from real ivory, so are some of the squares on the board I think. I wonder how much it is worth.
I'm not selling it though so that story has nothing to do with this thread. Anyways, carry on!

A thread can be whatever you want it to be. Don't let the conformists mould you.

You probably wouldn't be able to sell it, but maybe a museum would take it and then you could have "Cecil Donated this Chess Set" or something.
