Well looks like Eddie Redmayne is the front runner for best actor and Birdman/Boyhood a toss up for best film. Interesting..

If you are not black or white in Hollywood chances are your not getting nominated.
The only other problem is the film studios spend alot of time and money buying votes.

I think the bigger point is when was the last time an Asian actor had a leading role in a major Hollywood film? I can't remember one.
The Last Samurai is probably the closest one, and the lead isn't even an Asian.

Harold and Kumar is the closest to a 'major' film I can think of. That's about it.

You mean Hollywood movie that didn't star a martial artist who was asian? Cause there are tons of Hollywood movies that star Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
Tokyo Drift, Last Samurai, Inception and Star Trek are a few I can think of with Asian actors in significant roles that aren't stereotypical asian characters. I didn't count comedies cause they usually stereotype so obviously there will be asian actors in that.
I guess Harold and Kumar and 21 & Over are two comedies that don't make their asian leads overly "asian".

Yeah I suppose I forgot about the Martial Arts films.
Jackie Chan is a boss.

Actually, Martial Arts movies are pretty much the only movies I can think of that star Asian actors that don't need to be asian to make sense in the story or make the story more authentic. Last Samurai and Tokyo Drift used Asians cause they are set in Japan.
Find an Asian in a major role in a non-martial arts movie set in North America. Pretty hard to do. Inception is the only one I can think of. Jackie Chan in Rush Hour kinda works.

That's one of the only ones I could think of when making my post. Two guys that happen to be brown and asian, but it has no effect on the plot or their characters at all. I want to see more movies like that which reflect the actual diversity we see in real life living in a major city, I'm tired of "White Guy Saves The Day Volume 632"

What's great about the first Harold and Kumar is that every white gentile in that movie is a completely insane stereotype. It's fantastic.

So, big show is tonight. Any new predictions for winners?
To amend my earlier list, it's clear that Julianne Moore will win best actress, and not Rosamund Pike.

Last year I saw every single movie in the major categories so it was much more fun to follow along. I've seen less than half this year so I haven't even been watching the ceremony tonight... but I did see Theory of Everything and I'm glad Eddie Redmayne won for lead actor despite my love for Brad Coooper who I think saved Sniper from being an otherwise terrible film.

I still can't believe that the Lego Movie didn't get a nomination. Screw the academy.

Michael Keaton should have won and it shouldn't have been close.

Maybe I just don't have a finely tuned movie mind like everyone else, but Birdman just didn't do anything for me. I get that the Oscars love to reward movies about the movie industry and show business, but were there really people out there that were mesmerized, moved, or ready to give a standing ovation for this movie?

The best thing about Birdman was Michael Keaton, but I think Best Picture should have gone to Imitation Game (I didn't see Selma in that category.)

I wonder how many people could say the basic premise of Still Alice without having to look it up. I had honestly no idea what it was about in the slightest. I liked Julianne Moore back in the day, but she's delivered some terrible performances recently. There wasn't much competition this year, so maybe it was more of a career award for her?
