Agreed. I've read The Stand about 5 times now. One of the best books ever IMO. And if you like The Dark Tower series, you should love The Stand.

I just started re-reading this again a few weeks back and I'm very excited to hear this news!
The first act of the extended novel is the best fiction I've ever read, period.

I re-read the extended version this summer and the end was much worse than I remembered. Honestly, it really, really disappointed me. Right up there with Lost for worst endings to great stories.

Bump!
Just finished reading it (the extended version as suggested). Whew that is one long book, but I never felt that while reading it.
Really enjoyed the world building (destroying) as the virus hit, but I felt that King did such a great job of this and spent so much time on it that the last 3/4's of the book felt rushed to the conclusion.
Not quite a huge let down at the end, not Dark Tower level for sure.
Overall I really did enjoy it, would probably give it a solid 7/10 and would re-read again in the future.

Yeah, I hated the ending with the whole hand of god thing.
Its the King theory of book writing, he can't write an ending to save his life, see IT.
When he writes non horror or short stories he's much much better. Apt Pupil, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank redemption are good examples of that.

Yeah, I really enjoyed getting a good fill of RF in this book, fleshed him out even more from The Dark Tower series.

Completely agree. He is amazing at developing a world and taking an interesting premise and seeing where it leads but it always seems like the ending is a disappointment as he tries to create an explanation for what happened - and usually it's "aliens did it" or something similar. The advantage of short stories and novellas is that he often just skips that part and leaves the explanation up to the reader.
My favorite shorter form King works are The Long Walk and The Running Man (which shares only its name with the movie).

I think in that same book they had "Apt Pupil" which was outstanding, and "Getting it on" which was a great piece of writing.
The "Body" which became a movie was a much better short story.
