I dont mind his writing, but he is one of those guys that is heavily influenced by analytics. Analytics over eyes in his case which is not how I evaluate players/teams but Im still on board. I like what The Athletic is building so far and Im down for a 1 year sub to see how this season goes.

And it's not just that. I mean, it's that. But also, he is right and everyone else is wrong. Absolutely no middle ground or reasonability with him. He'll take a fairly extreme position, and then you either agree with him or you're misinformed.

Really annoying writer.

I think they've gone with a good mix of analytics and eyes with Kent and Eric. Should complement each other well. K, now gimme that 50% off deal, please.

Keep checking articles throughout the day. I did that yesterday and finally stumbled onto a 2 hour long 50% off deal. I assume they'll continue to do that.

He'll have editors and a different audience here. The tone will shift from a blog.

Kent's great. Smart dude... I was almost hoping it wasn't him so I could continue to get his writing without a paywall. But there's now enough talent and coverage that the subscription is worth it.

Kent's the best regular Flames writer. I'll probably buy a subscription now.

He's reasoned, level headed and not afraid to make unpopular statements based on evaluation and analysis.

In the end, he's been right about things way more than he's been wrong about his assessment of the team and individual players.

I suspected they'd land Duhatschek. Lots of columnists (and good ones at that) being let go at the Globe. It was only a matter of time.

Wilson, I'm not terribly familiar with.

In Wilson's piece he mentioned that they'll be adding someone focusing on the National Women's Hockey Team, and other Olympic athletes. Any idea who that could be? I'd guess Vicki Hall.

The Troy Brouwer Injury Hypothesis

Quote:
Some pockets of Flames fans are trying to find the silver lining to Troy Brouwer's disastrous first season in Calgary. Signed to a four year, $18 million contract last summer, Brouwer is Calgary's third highest paid forward behind Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, but finished 12th in team scoring (and near dead last by almost any advanced metric you care to name).

Hiding sports writing behind a paywall is obnoxious. Kent Wilson was worth the banner ads on FN, but certainly no sports writing team is worthy of 100/annum from me.

The best information and dialogue about the Flames has always come directly from this forum - real fans, who watch the games with their eyeballs, and are passionate about the franchise.

If the Players Tribune doesn't charge then spreadsheet bloggers should hold their horses.
Maybe I'm wrong... but I've never EVER read content on any sports site that I thought was worthy of direct payment from me. They don't even break news on those site, just filter it in from Twitter and other sites.

My guess is you are not their target market, then

Yeah, I am not big fan of subscription sites when you can get plenty of good content out there for free. I don't mind a banner ads etc. for 'free' content.

They do though have good writers and I see a niche out there for subscription site with all the mayhem in the publishing business lately. Not for me though and think they'll have a tough time. We'll see how their model holds up especially when renewals come up.

I am definitely the target market.

I read a ton of Flames content online every day. And I have money to give. I've just never seen a site worthy of direct contribution from the readers. Maybe I need to have more belief in the the subscription model. If I pay for something, I want it to be able to access something new, informative, different.

What about their model is particularly different than all the free media out there right now?

Well, it seems pretty clear that they are scooping up some of the best sports writers who publish 'free media' and are putting them behind a paywall

I signed up and don't mind paying for good content.

If the flames coverage is all like the Brouwer article and the blogs it comes from I'll probably cancel. To each their own, but I get no value out of that.
