We have a good chance to go streaking here. Boston should start Rask tomorrow, hopefully leaving us with the back up Thursday. Then we play two weaker teams after that game.

So after looking at the points per game chart and assuming .500 means one point a game there are 22 teams playing above 500.
Obviously this standard does not hold up.
Surprised that 500 is just not a meaningful statistic for hockey.

That's what happens when three points are handed out for games that end regulation tied. There have been 299 NHL games played this year, and 665 points have been earned. That's an average of 2.22 points per game. Divide that by 2 and that's likely where half the teams should fall above and below. Unsurprisingly, teams 15 and 16 both have 1.11 points per game. Unless the NHL hands out the same number of points per game, there will be a disproportionate amount of teams above .500, which will be correlated to the number of games that went into over time.

I get the theory.
We hit 96 points are we're nearly guaranteed to make the playoffs.
I'm saying that if you want the best view on how we're doing relative to the rest of the league, Point %'ge is your best tool.

As cool as the snake is, you're way to defensive.
People are using this thread to post alternate comparables for a playoff pace.
I am pretty sure most people you quote understand the complex science and methodology behind the snake.
However, please keep posting it.

Is Malcolm Subban the back-up right now? Haven't been following Boston too closely this year.

I'm 90% sure it's Zane McIntyre right now. Subban got one game before getting sent back to Providence.

The post game snake reappears after a great 2-1 win on the road. The Flames are now in double digit wins and have closed the gap between the red snake and the black line to 5.927 points. This is the closest it has been since after game 14. It is 3 points above the purple snake and 7 points below the green snake, both improvements from the last game.
If the Flames win the next two games, they get back to .500 on the year and would be 4.268 points below the black line. The next snake update will be Monday, and possibly late Monday night, due to travel.

The blue snake remains the lowest snake for the canucks. After 21 games it is 6.585 points below the black line, and 4 points behind last year's 75 point yellow snake.
The orange snake has climbed above the black line again, putting 0.244 points of distance between the two. It is now tied with the bright blue snake after 22 games. Game 22 was the last time the bright blue snake was ever above the black line. With 48 points in the remaining 60 games, the bright blue snake cruised along at an 0.8 PPG mark, putting it on pace for 66 points on the year during that stretch. Will the orange snake mirror the bright blue snake, or will it go after the purple snake? Stay tuned to find out.

Maybe this is sadistic, but I kind of want to see an Edmonton snake chart with, like, the last ten years of dead snakes.

Here are the last five seasons, not including the lockout season of 2012-13. Without blowing the image up huge, it's tough to see, since the snakes keep clustering around the 0.817 PPG mark (67 points on the season).
Here's Vancouver's for the same frame. They had the two President's Cup years, plus some terrible years, so the snakes are more spread out.
