Here is an interesting reference website that ties in to our discussion about density altitude:

http://www.worldflightplanner.com/airports/CAN-CYYC

This website displays the density altitude for YYC based on the current weather conditions, you can see it near the top of the page. The aviation forecasts are below.

as a fairly newbie trader, what are peoples thoughts on this impacting westjet?
I got in when it was around $10 a couple years ago and it now sits around $14. With that new facility right beside the airport and plans to have YYC become what this thread shows does anyone think this will play a beneficial role to the comapny?

I don't think a single airport (even YYC as the WS hub) is really going to affect their stock price. Things like the price of oil, load factors, and many other indicators in aviation will drive that.

For anyone interested, the Airdrie Flying Club is hosting their COPA Kids day on May 28.

Kids aged 7-17 can fly for free, flights are about 12-15mins long. Depart from the Airdrie Airpark.

You have to register online and can select a time (if available) that works for you and your kid(s).

http://www.airdrieflyingclub.ca/copakids.htm

Here is the direct registration link:

Rumour has it that the parallel runway will be delayed by one year for completion. This could perhaps be an indication that the city and airport authority have reached some form of agreement for the runway tunnel/underpass (now known as the Tunderpass).

Here is a link to a video of the new terminal:

http://www.calgaryairport.com/Defaul...cid=311&lang=1

Some stats on the building:

Overview of the International Facilities Project (IFP):

-$1.4 billion investment
-In-service October 2015
-Five levels and 183,500 m2
-22 aircraft gates

The IFP is a green building:

-The building will have 600 geothermal wells and 660 km of in-floor radiant heating tubes
-Co-generation will save 4,900 tonnes of CO2/year
-10 million litres of rainwater will be harvested and recycled annually
-The IFP will be developed with a high performance building envelope
-The concourse will operate with a de-centralized mechanical and electrical systems

If you want to be a millionaire, begin as a billionaire and start an airline!

I'm fairly certain that any known delay in the runway to this point has absolutely nothing to do with the tunnel.

A late spring makes much more sense as the reason for a delay.

The McCall Way / Barlow roundabout is supposedly now fully open now.

Before, it was open, but not really of any point, since only McCall Way was connected to it.

I should mention too that the deep utilities tender (storm sewers) is out now too, along with the rough grading (excavation) one, for the tunnel.

The new runway will apparently have a Cat III(a) ILS system. This will lower the minimum decision height to 100' above ground level and lower the RVR (runway visual range) requirements to 600' instead of 1000'.

An ATC'er on SSP says this is probably overkill, as the type of weather below our current ILS minimums only happens for literally a few hours every year. But if the airport authority wants it they can have it.

The question is will they install this system on the existing runway 16/34 once the new parallel is up and running and 16R/34L gets work done on it.

John McLean approves.

Yeah, one of my co-workers was modelling a couple of the trusses today trying to give our estimating department an idea of how they'd have to go about Erecting some of the steel. Looks like an airport, but a lot more steel than was in the Edmonton Terminal expansion. Also a fair bit more complex.

Anyone read the letter to the editor regarding the new runway in today's herald?

I facepalm'd while reading it for sure. Freaking uneducated assumptions.

That letter was beyond terrible, the writer is clearly completely clueless to how things work with ATC and aviation in general.

Comparing Las Vegas to Calgary is apples to oranges. You can't just say "Vegas handless XXX more passengers than Calgary and has 4 runways, so that must mean Calgary only handling XX passengers doesn't need 4 runways.".

Vegas has two sets of parallel runways, Calgary has only 2 runways being used by our scheduled flights and they intersect each other. It's a totally different scenario.

An interesting bird in YYC right now. Qatari Amiri Flight A340-200 arrived yesterday afternoon from Paris, it is supposed to be departing back to Paris today around 5:10pm.

Captured on arrival yesterday by YYC spotter "WeeinYYC":
