A "hearing"? So I assume that means a guaranteed suspension of some sort?

Probably only deserves 1 game, but the Wideman effect will make it 2 games

It's pretty simple, I don't think he did it on purpose. I think he was just trying to do a reverse hit on Doughty and the elbow was accidental.
Not dirty, just unfortunate.

Exactly. There are multiple elbows every night in the NHL - and an elbow, by definition, hits the head (or it isn't called an elbow).
Did I miss a memo? When did elbows change from a 2 minute penalty to a 2 game suspension?

I believe they can also issue no penalty, or a fine.

I'm in the camp that thinks that supplementary discipline is warranted for that elbow. What I have trouble reconciling though is how many hits that have been just just as bad or even much worse that have escaped supplementary discipline.

He doesn't even see where Doughty's head is, he didn't target the head, it's a penalty worthy play and that's it.
What about when someone punches a player in a scrum? That's a targeted head attack. Why isn't that suspended?
When Tkachuk was tackled in the corner - that's not a hockey play, that's intent to injure. Why aren't the Kings facing supplemental discipline?
Gaudreau's hand was slashed off this year, why was there no additional discipline levied there?
The league lacks consistency and calls whatever the media spins up. It's garbage.

Isn't every elbow to the face/head, really that's the definition of an elbow.

But that's the thing - it wasn't on an unsuspecting player as an attempt to injure or intimidate. Tkachuk didn't go after anybody. It was a simple play with two guys battling int eh corner.
Tkachuk and Doughty battled all night. They both knew what they were in for and participated willingly. Doughty said as much.
What Tkachuk did happens all the time. This play is only getting attention because Doughty misplayed it and it happened to catch him in the chops. And he stayed on the ice.

I'm usually not one to defend our players when they do crap, and Tkachuk is certainly a player who I'd expect to do some things that warrant suspension. That said, maybe my Flames goggles have got on really tight today, but from the replays I saw (maybe I missed a better angle in the thread) I can't even tell if the elbow hit Doughty.
Again, maybe it's my Flames homer ism, but this incident doesn't even rank that high on my Tkachuk should have been suspended list. I'm not even convinced he elbowed him on purpose (if he did elbow him). To me it looked like a play that happens multiple times a game where the player about to go into the boards almost throws himself backwards to bounce off the player coming in behind him (maybe that should be interference every time mind you). Not even sure it was an intentional attempt to injure versus he just caught him wrong.
All that said, if he did catch him with the elbow, I have no issue with the league dolling out a minor suspension, as any head contact is what they are looking to get out of the game, and at the very least, Tkachuk needs to be in control of what he's doing.

That's right... when you don't have a valid argument, there is always the "you're old, something something, yelling at clouds, something" fall-back post.

no real intent there. He would need eyes in the back of his head to do it on purpose. He felt Doughty coming in to get him and tried to fend it off with a high elbow.... which should have been fended off easily by Doughty, but I guess he checks with his head nowadays
still definitely penalty worthy. and so was the retaliation. I can understand the first ref missing the elbow but you can't not call the retaliation just because you think it might have been justified for something you missed.

I don't think it's a huge issue, his elbow got a little high and the follow through of his arm makes it look worse than it is
It's a little reckless though which seems to be 1 or 2 games with the NHL

The Tkachuk hearing will take place in early evening, after the Flames touchdown in DC.
