This is the NHL Dream of what a breakaway should look like

Ummmmm. This isn’t a comparison in equipment as much as human size.

It will be interesting to see what happens if this change in equipment size makes for a permanent adjustment of SV% and GAA to most goaltenders especially the ones that rely on using their size to cover the net over athleticism. I imagine the more goaltenders that struggle the more they will complain about "bruises".

Like all the other changes they've made, it'll have a short term impact, goalies will adjust, and then we'll have this passive-aggressive conversation all over again.

That was a field lacrosse pic. Box lacrosse goalies are padded like crazy, especially up top.

Yea i know, thats why i put a picture of a lacrosse player and not a goalie as the NHL vision for goalies....
Massive net for shooters and nothing more. haha

Technically 2 goals on 3 shots as the 2nd was off a juicy rebound.

He avoided 8 “bruises” tonight. Well done Elliott, well done. If he continues this trajectory, he’ll be out of hockey and bruise free for the rest of his career.

As a goalie those knee extensions save alot of painfull shots. I still wear the knee protectors but they only work so well.
Growing up I had pretty small pads. I used the Louisville tps pads. They were fine except it was becoming more common for goalie instructors to teach the butterfly postion. These pads were not made with that in mind.
Example.
I think keeping long above the knee is a safety thing. I stopped getting bruised knees and thighs after they got bigger . I didn't stop more pucks 5 hole because of the longer pads since the tops are malleable. I did notice tho I didnt have the puck ding me every 5 hole shot tho.
I think smaller leg pads would be fine if every goalie was still playing the stand up still vs butter fly.

Not exactly sure about it being a short term impact. Any goaltender that relied on the larger equipment to aid their game likely isn't going to get better in other areas to compensate. That said the changes are pretty subtle and I expect will result in a small handful of goals scored on a weekly basis that may have previously been stopped in equipment. Nothing earth shattering but a worthy change and anything that results in a few extra goals is worth it in a league where goaltenders are getting bigger.
