Meanwhile in Qatar on Saturday, it's Nadal vs. Joker for the 47th time (currently tied 23-23 although Joker has won the last four meetings).

Well with that Novak demolition of Nadal in mind, time for the obvious question of the 2016 tennis season: Will Novak win the calendar slam? And if not, where does he lose it? I honestly think he's doing it, I don't trust Andy at all, Roger can't beat him 3 out of 5, Rafa is a non-factor.
It's basically again going to come down to Stan (or someone like a Anderson or Tsonga) getting into a ridiculous zone and just stealing a win. Or maybe Novak draws a Kyrgios early in a tournament and he plays out of his mind. But beating Novak in 3 out of 5 is the toughest thing in tennis right now. I just don't see who has the game to do it.

If he loses I bet it's at the French on clay. Has he even won that tournament?

Philip Bester is into the final of the USA Futures in Los Angeles. Hasn't dropped a set.

He's probably Canada's 3rd best player right now and this is a good start to the year. I believe the winner gets 27 points, which is quite alot when you're ranked down in the 300s

That's a real promising start to the year for Milos, considering all of his injuries in 2015. Great stuff!

Just finished watching the replay, Milos played well even though his serve wasn't all that great today, it also helped that he caught Roger on a bad day. Ground strokes and movement from Milos were superb though.

A clean victory no less (i.e. no tiebreakers). The trouble for Milos this year will be overcoming his seeding early on the retain the points he had before the injury so he can get back into the top 8 seeds. But a start like this already picking up 100 points certainly helps.

I thought Milos' game looked far more reliable and confident top to bottom. he stood his ground on the baseline without brainlessly trying to whack low percentage winners, and had good instincts on when to step forward into the kill zone. some kind words from his sickly opponent:
Quote:
"I just think his consistent power is something that's so impressive. The focus he brings to every single serve," the 17-time Grand Slam champion said. "I've always said it's amazing that he can do that. For a big guy he moves well. He's improved his fitness the last few years. Also, tactically I think he's better now than he's ever been. He's made a conscious effort of playing close to the baseline… It's a great start for him. I'm very happy for him."
|
or, maybe Ljubicic was sent by Raonic as a double agent to sabotage Roger and get him out of the way. either strategy works.

As much as I hate seeing Roger lose, I'm somewhat comforted that it was to Milos.

Daniel Nestor just won a historical 1000th match in doubles, the first person in the Open Era to do it. Incredible.
Genie defeated Mattek-Sands 6-2, 6-1 at the Hobart International. She's facing Van Uytvanck next.

Congrats to old man Nestor (what does that make me since I'm older than Nestor). Also, didn't Mattek-Sands make a pretty deep run at the US Open last year? That's a nice win by Genie.

Mattek-Sands is wildly inconsistant and a giant killer. She can take Serena to the brink or lose to anyone 62 61.
Pospisil beat Karlovic in Auckland 76 75. He gets gets Jack Sock next haha.
