Yes, he galvanized them using Twitter and Facebook.
The social media angle is huge, especially if the younger vote turned out in much larger numbers. I didn't read a single piece of print media or television (except for election night) during the campaign. All of the information I got was through the internet. That's significant.

They are even less tolerate for homosexuality than churches. The Saudi's execute people on homosexuality. Tho that is extreme wahabi's and not the ismaili. As for him being gay, I thought that was just a rumor based on him having one of his events at a gay bar. He did mention something about starting coming back to Calgary to try to put down some roots and potentially start a family in an interview one time. I'll see if I can find it.

All my election decisions were because someone uploaded debates and speeches to youtube.
(If I didn't have that, I probably would have read some election coverage in the newspaper... but I probably wouldn't have been nearly as well informed.)

Him being a Muslim was reasonably well known before the election, and was obviously not an issue. His racial background was obvioius, and was obviously not an issue. If he is in fact gay, that wasn't well known before the election. Would it have been an issue, moreso than his race or religion?

He won by getting his message, which was clear and meaningful to the largest number of voters. Social media helped play a part in distributing that message.

Naheed is definitely not openly gay. If he is gay, he definitely isn't open about it. Why should it really matter anyways? Its about the city and his vision instead of his sexuality.

He's just a crazy patch work quilt that we call Nenshi.
Personally, I didn't know that he was a gay Muslim until after I voted for him.
I don't think any differently about him now, either. I doubt it would have been a large enough issue to keep him from being elected.

Just to reiterate, if Naheed is gay, he is not open about it.

I know. I'm just having fun, as it shouldn't be an issue either way. Are there any closeted heterosexual political leaders? What about non-practicing homosexuals?

And quite honestly, you don't know he is gay now. There are rumors of it of course, but aside from the purple thing, there really hasn't been much indication of it.
Now that bald guy on Shaw on election night... thats another story all together.

I had to look twice, and a third time to determine if he was indeed, a bearded lady.

I am very proud of my parents, who come from a much different generation than mine. They saw past all this stuff that doesnt matter and voted for Nenshi because he seemed like the right person for the job.
