People don’t do English well. Germany? It’s taught there. Italy? Not taught English as far as I know. Scandinavian countries teach English in schools. Swedes, Danes and Norwegians generally speak solid English. Holland is another country where English is widely understood and spoken.

Eastern Europe and Russia don’t teach English as far as I know which is why most Russians, Czechs and Slovaks know little to no English before coming over.

Back in January, Craig Button had Pellettier and Nikolaev at 11 and 12 respectively.

Interesting that he has the same agent as Zagidulin and Zavgorodniy who both recently signed with the Flames.

English is a second language in pretty much all scandinavian countries now, Poland, Slovenia, Czechia, Germany, Austria and Switzerland are about 65% english speaking now so lots of eastern euros are taking on english.

Italy is weird, they love western culture but don't want to learn the language, from all accounts only about 30% know english. Even more weird is to the south the island nation of Malta is about 90% english speaking

More I look into him the happier I get. Lots of comments and mock drafts from the last few months have him going in the 1st round. Does anyone know why he fell to 88th? Usual Russia factor? Lack of scouting in the MHL? Injury?

Well Maltese is not going to take you very far, unless you're a fluffy dog.

I haven't been this excited about a draft pick since Tkachuk. Huge get for the Flames, IMO. Seems ultra-talented

Russian factor mostly. And hes not an offensive flashy player. He has all the skill, but hes a defensive minded center who can set up the best wingers.

Craig had Ilya 19th in his final rankings FWIW.

Craig Button's Analysis
"Very good two-way centre. Smart, good puck skills, makes plays and has a strong understanding of the game in all areas with and without the puck."

Projection: No. 2 Two-Way Centre
Comparable: Adam Henrique

Pronman noted "First line center for Russia's U18 team the last two years"

Third rounders take a couple of years if ever to turn pro, his contract does not bother me.

I looked it up and he plays on the same team as several good NHLers did.

Notably Artem Anisimov. It would be great Nikolayev turned into a quality middle 6 centre like that!

What I've been told by Dutch/Danish/Norweigian/Sweedish people is that they don't get many books, movies, or T.V. shows translated into their natural language so they have more incentive to actually learn English. Movies are T.V are subtitled as opposed to dubbed over. Whereas larger countries like France/Germany/Itay/Spain/Russia get all this translated. So the people are less inclined to learn how to converse in English.

English is mandated as a non-optional class in Germany, Hungary, Austria. On the other hand, I have been to Italy a few times and I've only once been in an area where no one spoke a English.
