#Flames GM Brad Treliving on starting with 20-man roster, placing Derek Ryan, etc., on taxi squad: "Needless to say, we're involved in some cap Cirque du Soleil."

I agree that Ryan is a better player than Nordstrom but I think you might be overselling how much.
Keeping Ryan out longer = more money to play with around TDL right? IMO we should be trying to maximize our space later in the season. If we're playing well, we can use the space to go hunting for a big contributor. If we're playing poorly, then the extra space can be used to help maneuver some trades.

Ryan's new nickname could be "Yoyo." I can see him up and down all season. With a taxi squad, all moves are paper. You aren't sending him to Stockton physically like you'd have to do with regular waivers.

#Flames will reassign winger Jakob Pelletier to Val-d'Or of QMJHL. WHLers Dustin Wolf and Connor Zary will skate with #Flames minor-league group for now.

Ryan's the type of player that typically responds positively after being a healthy scratch.
It's a shame to see a guy who's played the way Ryan has fall off the main roster, but Ryan still has a role on this team. He will get his minutes and when it's his time to play he'll be ready.

The Q league is up and running. Until the W starts up, may as well keep the other kids in town.

The financial aspect of this has been explained multiple times already. I doubt there is a single person on here who thinks Nordstrom is a better player than Ryan. And I am extremely confident the coaching staff doesn't either.
Ryan will play. But they are going to have him on the taxi squad every non-game day they can, in order to manage the cap.

Still unclear when the AHL might start up though.
Might actually get more experience just by practicing with the big squad.

Hailey Salvian @hailey_salvian
Treliving says the #Flames can keep their AHL players in Calgary, separate from their NHL group, until their leagues are up and running.

Looking at the schedule- i find it very odd that the flames play 3 games in 6 days then go on a 5 day break in the first 2 weeks.

I totally understand the financial aspect of it but the savings are relatively limited. Just $300k over a whole season, and that's assuming Ryan will be waived five times. That's playing awfully risky chess if you ask me.
I also just don't trust the Flames to make the right coaching move in this scenario.

So, how does that work? Separate practices for the taxi and AHL groups? Does that include coaches and staff?

Even if you think the coaching staff has him penciled in as the 13th forward (unlikely, IMO), what do you think the odds are that there will be zero injuries?
There is no way that he will be waived 5 times. I doubt he is waived again (because he wouldn't clear). But for now, every penny that they save in the first couple weeks will help
