For better or for worse, the possibilities for this technology seem endless...

Very powerful technology. However, it's proving to be less targeted than expected, which can result in unintended consequences.

Perhaps. But it's also showing some promise in medical applications. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00339-3

Oh absolutely! Huge potential, but I think the precision is still an issue that needs to be improved before it's safe for human applications.

Funny this thread came up. I was just having a conversation with the boss about the ethics of Mainline and Germline editing.

Personally I think single generation (designer baby) change is ok. Multi generation changes however I draw the line at.

CRISPR is fascinating and scary but I'm all for studying it. I think it's amazing how you can buy a kit off of Amazon and have it at your door in a day or two.

Biohacking is so cool in a "you go do that to yourself, I'm just gonna watch" way.

And there's the big problem in my eyes. You won't be able to draw lines. We can make all the rules we want, but I don't see how controlling this will be at all possible. The unintended consequences for this are off the charts. Not much we can do but sit back and watch everything get way better, or way worse.

By the time this becomes available to the regular public it'll be used by the uber-rich to create even more division between classes, possibly leading to a new species that will enslave us all. Or maybe I watch too much scifi.
