Nice!!

Leaving on Friday for another weekend of camping up toward Edmonton, then another week in September, in BC, around Radium. But, needed a wee bit of home time.

Leaving on vacation today and seeing nothing but sunshine and low thirties in the forecast. Screw you Calgary summer this year, this makes me happy.

Optimistic Statistics

-Since 1990,global extreme poverty has decreased from 35% to 9%. By 2030, it will be 5%.
https://ourworldindata.org/extreme-poverty

-Since 1950, global life expectancy has increased from 45.8 years to 72 years. That means humans live 0.4 years longer per year, which is crazy.
https://ourworldindata.org/life-expectancy

-The world is gaining vegetation, and the number of plants is increasing. Since 2003 plant growth has increased by over 4 billion tonnes (measured in carbon). Nearly every country is reforesting.
https://www.iflscience.com/environme...tting-greener/

-Global literacy has increased from 42% in 1960 to 86% in 2015
https://ourworldindata.org/literacy

-Almost half the world is now middle class, and that number grows by 150 million each year
https://www.brookings.edu/research/t...iddle-class-2/

-In 2002, there were 442,000 homicides on earth. In 2017, there were only 405,000 homicides. This is despite the fact that the global population increased by almost 2 billion people in that time span.
https://ourworldindata.org/homicides

-Global hunger has almost been eradicated. Child labour is now very rare. More hours are spent on leisure time. More money is also spent on leisure.

It's easy to think that the world is going into the dumpster. But really, it has been improving in almost every human metric.
If only the pacific garbage patch and habitat loss could be handled as well as these other issues.

I just discharged myself from the hospital against doctors advice and feel like a total bad ass. It’s the kind of thing I’ve only ever seen action movie heroes do.

Today, I am very happy that geneticists exist, that after nearly 10 years, we finally have a solid diagnosis after multiple incorrect diagnoses and while there is no cure, there are some supportive treatment options. Also very glad that the geneticist has access to funding to do further gene studies to determine the mutation/variant in order to name the subtype so that treatment can be more specifically tailored.

My sister went through this with my nephew, he was finally diagnosed with a very rare disorder.

I sat in a zodiac boat yesterday as a humpback whale did a full breach about 50m away. Was just one of those wow moments.

the rec-hockey league i play in had our captains meeting last night - that makes me happy becuz it means the league starts up again next week!!!!

another great thing is you get to see who some of the new teams are. we have a new team in our div called the fighting dolphins (which is a pretty great name) but the highlight of the night would have been the new team in the div below ours called the 'all canadian meat missiles'. ha! ha! it would be hard to play them becuz i'd be giggling the entire game!

Even though Petro Canada is towards the bottom of my gas station preference list (crap rewards program, prices usually higher than nearby competition), I welcome the reintroduction of the clips. Their absence always puzzled me, especially when other stations had them.

Shell has the locks. It blows in the winter filling up a full size truck at -20C without the locks.
