CHI/ARZ - Duclair to Chicago
Quote:
@PierreVLeBrun
Anthony Duclair headed to the Blackhawks. Apparently he's on a plane so hasn't been informed yet.

Done deal. Hearing Richard Panik and Adam Clendenning also involved as part of the deal. @NHLBlackhawks @ArizonaCoyotes @NHL

Clendening looked like a great prospect while in Chicago's org, but ever since he left that has changed

If there is a place to raise your stock it has to be in Chicago, seems like many players are rejuvenated playing in that city. I would imagine he has to be ecstatic about this move. It will be interesting how he plays or if his attitude issues change playing for a team known for winning cups and not lottery picks and losing.

Pretty good deal for the Hawks unless there's more going to AZ than Panik (who has scored less than Duclair). Clendening once was a Hawk so I suppose they figure he's a good guy for their farm depth.

Yeah, Panik is bad and overpaid at 2.8M...so uh...looks like they got Duclair in exchange for "a hockey player".
...but they could've had Matt Stajan!

for Panik + X

Seems like X is Dauphin-not bad potential but shouldn't amount to anything above a 3rd liner. Win for the Hawks

That's actually okay for ARZ. Still got a guy that can do stuff. I was figuring a sack of hockey tape and a pack of opee-chee hockey cards with the gum still in.

the fancy stats actually said Duclair was someone that was pretty intriguing...the Chicago Effect will probably turn him into a player...

So the Hawks get arguably the best player and save some cap space. Pretty decent trade for them.

Really though this trade does nothing for the Coyotes. They aren’t in position to be giving up the best player in trades.

Short term, this is a big win for Chicago.
Just getting rid of Panik for $2.8 million cap hit for this season AND next, is enough of a win. Bowman overpaid Panik for what now looks like a flash in the pan season, and the Coyotes are now bailing him out.
Duclair is more than 50% cheaper than Panik, has roughly the same number of points as Panik in roughly the same number of games this season, and is RFA next season so the Blackhawks can easily cut ties with him if it doesn't work out. The upside is if they can finally get Duclair to commit, they have a top 6 winger on their hands.
The upside in this for the Coyotes is Dauphin. They are obviously high on him as the originally drafting team, but time will tell how much NHL upside there is, but taking on a bad contract and giving up the best player in the deal for Dauphin?

Panik was wildly inconsistent for the 'Hawks, though, was one of their few physical players, having led them in hits. The hope was that he would be the RW answer for Toews' line. But, that has been a revolving door.
The move does gain about $1M for cap, but, if Duclair does well, he might be too expensive to keep, as he becomes an RFA.
Clendening goes to the Rock, and simple seems a move to balance the cash, a little.
Dauphin is behind too many forwards, although none of the guys in front of him are true Centers.
I read somewhere that the move was instigated by Duclair, who wanted out from the Dogs. Guys with attitude don't really last in Chicago.
BTW in December, news had Hartman "liking" a tweet that slammed Panik (Hartman has since deleted his "like"), about the time the 'Hawks called up Hinostrosa. So perhaps this too, was a "chemistry" move.

I wonder how many Panik-jokes the poor guy has heard in his life. Probably could have a good talk with Miro Satan.
