I'm sure there are probably a few U2 haters in here, but I ain't one of them. This song is just flat out fantastic. Love the way the Edge's guitar comes in around the 3:27 mark, and then builds into the kind of majestic musical climax that only these guys can deliver. Pure ear candy. They've still got it.
I don't really hate U2, but to say I loved them would be too strong a word. That's besides the point, because it made me remember one of my favorite spoken word/talking bits by Henry Rollins. I used to listen to albums of his spoken word stuff for hours at a time. Nowhere else do you hear someone speak to a crowd with almost zero regard for whether or not they offended someone, and yet he was rarely vulgar and often fascinating. For that reason, hearing his albums are refreshing, and whether you agree with him or not, you are at least entertained.
Here's his bit on his hatred of U2. LOTS of swearing, so obviously NSFW
NSFW!

I hadn't heard this song in a long time but it came up on my mix today. Jenny Lewis, of Rilo Kiley and Postal Service fame, put out an amazing solo album of slower/acoustic/folk-country about a decade ago. This track is just one of the many great songs on it.
And every once in a while, I will continue to throw in a Tom Waits track to remind everyone just how awesome he is. Some of his sounds are an acquired taste, but this one goes down smooth (other than his gravely voice).

Listening to lots of older stuff lately, especially Leonard Cohen for some reason. But tonight, I pulled out Minutemen's Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat.

Was never really into Avatar before but their latest album Avatar Country has me completely hooked. Minus the two tracks that are just spoken and meant to be funny. The rest are just awesome, some great guitar work on there.

If you ever get a chance to see these guys live, don't think just buy the tickets. One of the best live acts I have seen in years. I've been a fan since Black Waltz which is a phenomenal album and agree the latest is also very good.
They were in Calgary in November opening up for In this Moment (another favourite of mine) and they stole the show. A few of my friends didn't even know who they were but were so blown away by their performance they are going to see them in Spokane this weekend.
Funny you say that, they're on tour right now but dont come anywhere near Calgary. But yes I've gone through their older albums and the Black Waltz is awesome, so is Hail the Apocalypse. Based off youtube their live shows do look to be pretty amazing! Heck of a band.
